We're up above the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and Harbor today, courtesy of Nathan Miller and his Kite Photography Aerial Photos. This is what he had to say about his excursion north, to frozen Keweenaw parts:
Here are a few kite aerial photographs from my recent trip up the Keweenaw to the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. The entire harbor was frozen solid, and Lake Superior was safe out at least 150' by the looks of it. It was a bit chilly up there with 25 mph winds and about 5 degrees out, but I was bundled up well and had snowshoes to keep me grounded on the ice. Most importantly, it was SUNNY! It's been much too gray this winter and I took full advantage of the nice weather to get out and fly. One of my cameras died in the cold but fortunately this was the first flight with a backup camera to capture twice as many photos.
The first shot is a view of the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse, with a wider view of Lake Superior in the background. There's an open channel of water in the distance, with more ice behind. You can't walk out to Isle Royale yet!
The second picture is another view of the Lighthouse, along with the town in the background. You can even see the cutoff road that takes you back up to US 41, over on the upper left.
In the last photo you get a view of the ice within the harbor, which was frozen solid and amazingly clear. Unfortunately I didn't know this was here, as from my flying position on the ground it was blocked from view by a high ice ridge. Otherwise I'd have stopped for some more shots!
What a great way to explore the area. You can show Nathan your thanks for sharing his views with us, by heading over to his Facebook page and clicking the "LIKE" button there. You can do so here:
