A rainbow during the winter, isn't the most common phenomenon, so I was thrilled when Emma Stout sent today's photos to share with us all. The top two photos show us what is called a Sun Dog, which can occur during any season, but sure is spectacular reflecting off the white of the snow.
That sun dog quickly turned into a bright orange glow in the sky as the sun continued on its descent to the horizon. Thankfully, Emma captured that happening too, including the coloring of the clouds as the sun went below the tree line for the day. Spectacular optical phenomenon happening in the Keweenaw atmosphere, another reason this is someplace special.

Beautiful, Emma! That last photo reminds me of a scene in "Gone With The Wind", after Sherman 'marched' through Atlanta, GA.:-]
