Today's photos were snapped by Danielle Adams, a self-proclaimed boat nerd, who enjoys keeping an eye on the freighter traffic on Lake Superior. Here's what she had to say about the Pierson's arrival in Marquette Harbor this week:
"Here is the Robert S. Pierson arriving in Marquette on Monday (1-13-14). This is a boat I have not seen before. They are currently on the Marquette to Soo run, bringing ore to Essar Steel. I was waiting for them since about 4:00 p.m., when I saw they were getting close to Munising and timed it right. About 5 p.m. they were just visible along the skyline and within 20 minutes they were in and at the dock! Talk about not wasting time getting here..."
With the Soo Locks closed down as of yesterday, the boating traffic is mostly done for the season, although you still may see a few boats on Lake Superior, as they go back and forth from the Soo to Marquette to Duluth. I'm not sure how many or if they run back and forth through the locks shut down period. Hopefully one of our viewers will be able to clarify that for us. Inquiring minds want to know!
