A Yooper Christmas poem, hope you enjoy!
Hunters were snoring, their bellies were full
They all were exhausted from “shootin’ the bull.”
Dreaming quite grandly, they slept in their beds
While visions of 30-pointers dashed through their heads.
When out in the popples came such a beastly noise
All the campers woke up. It’s the apple knocker boys!
I sprang out of my sack and onto the floor,
Jumped over Eino and kicked open the door.
And what should we see standing under moonbeams?
A most glorious sight, twas the buck of our dreams.
His antlers were massive, the ground shook when he walked
We just stood there and stared, none of us talked.
His immense muscles rippled, his nostrils spewed steam,
And several large drop tines hung from his main beam.
Then he jumped into the popples with a lightening quick bound
His antlers caught the whips, which he ripped from the ground.
He snorted and grunted as he plowed through the trees
This was too much to take; we were weak in the knees.
Sharp hooves went to work kicking up soil and snow,
The world’s biggest scrape reached 100 yards or so.
Smaller deer looked on as he continued his deed,
They stood there in awe of his great power and speed.
With one final pass he completed his task.
“What’s he gonna do now?” I heard one of us ask.
What happened that moment we all swore we’d deny
A powerful glow lit up the snow and sky.
Toivo spoke first. “Do you see it? He said.
“Holy wah, everything’s glowing, his nose is red.
Then over the swamp there appeared such a sight,
A sleigh pulled by 10-pointers dropped out of the night.
This was no scrape at all, it was perfectly clear,
The buck had carved a landing strip for the eight other deer.
The sleigh touched down gently and a large elf hopped out,
“It’s time to go, Rudy.” He said with a shout.
Walking right over, he gave the big deer a hug
The huge buck was harnessed, and they were off with a tug.
The elf turned toward us with a wink of his eye,
“This one’s mine boys, I’ll bid you good bye.”
As they sped through the night we all heard him say,
“You guys have a good season … Merry Christmas, eh!”
