Melanie Hakala Rossi (the first two photos) and Bob Gilreath (the third photo), supply us with today's look at the accumulation of snow here in the Keweenaw.
Melanie snapped a couple photos of the snow that has built up and over the edge of the roofline of her home in Dollar Bay. It takes a combination of heavy snowfall and winds to blow it around and over the edge to make something like this happen when the temperatures have been so freezing cold. It's a more common sight to see, when we've had a warm up in temperatures and the snow begins to slide off the roof due to it melting some and moving over the edge. The overhang in these two photos is what you might call a roofdrift.
The bottom photo, from Bob, is how he measures the snowfall there in Hubbell. It's his standard "grill shot", showing how much snow has fallen and accumulated on the grill he keeps there on his deck. The grill, of course, is the silver thing covered with snow and if you're wondering how long it took to pile up that high…Bob says that it took three days of "lake effect" snowfall to bring it to the level it's at right now. He knows this since he used the grill for Sunday's dinner and this photo was actually taken on Wednesday.
I don't know exact measurements for the actual amount we have on the ground or how much has fallen so far, but I think I'm safe to say that we're way ahead of our "normal" totals for December. And just think, winter doesn't really start for another week!

With almost 90 inches to date in Keweenaw County, I'll wager that 400" will finally be broken this year.

Melanie, Are you sure there aren't a whole hive of snow-balled faced hornets building a home on the eave of that house? It sure looks like some of the hives I've seen around here!
