You never know what you're going to see when E. Neil Harri takes to the skies with his camera.

Today's shots are again up in the Copper Harbor area. That's Fort Wilkins hiding there below in the snow. If it wasn't for the windows of the Fort buildings showing up as dark spots, you may not have been able to see the compound at all, due to all that whiteness. If there had been airplanes back when the Fort was a functioning military base, they'd have been hidden quite well from enemy air attacks in the winter.

Neil's second shot is looking back toward Copper Harbor, with Lake Fanny Hooe on the left and the Harbor waters still open and free of ice. Neil tells me that the iced over lake you see in the center of the photo, is Lake Lily, which I never knew existed until seeing this photo. He said that it is surrounded by private land, with no public access that he knows of.

Pretty amazing what is hiding amongst all the trees and forest land in the Keweenaw that we can't see until we're soaring up above it all. Thanks for the birds-eye view, Neil!

Nice views! The color shades of winter...white, grey and blue (a little in the second pic).

Good pics.

Thanks, Neil. You reminded me of the fact that I haven't been to
Fort Wilkins for quite some time. Maybe next year I'll take some of
our many summer visitors up there for a visit.

82 years old, born and raised in Houghton and I can't remember even hearing of Lake Lily. Thanks Neil and Mary and everyone else of Pasty Central. Live with all the other thin blooded folks in Florida, but get a warm transfusion of UP every day on this site. Thanks

Bet it was cold UP there ~ in the air and on the ground!! Thanks for the views, Neil!

I was so happy to see more aerial views . I am always amazed by how different things look from above. I especially love the second one as it really shows the shape of Copper harbor! Awesome!

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Thursday, December 12, 2013 - 12:40 pm:

I had to save that second picture. You can just about make out my house. These pictures must have been taken a week or so ago. The harbor is frozen over out to the lighthouse, although I don't think I'd want to try to walk on it. Lake Lily is a picturesque little pond, and where it empties into Copper Harbor is what we residents call "the culverts." I'm sorry, but Neil is right: there is no public access to any of the land you see on a line from the lighthouse to Fort Wilkins.

Sharon, it looks like you live on an 'upper peninsula' of the Upper Peninsula! No wonder you can hear the Big Lake 'singing'.;)
