Our Shoebox Memory series has featured early explorers to the U.P., like Father Jacques Marquette, Douglass Houghton and others. Today we fast forward to more recent exploration memories of the U.P. with the lofty view from space through the eyes of Astronaut Karen L. Ryberg, the 50th woman in space. On her recent voyage aboard the International Space Station, Karen captured that lovely shot of the U.P. above, framed between Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. But what really caught my eye (in her food juggling act) was what appears to be a pasty in her right hand. Karen is from Parkers Prairie, Minnesota, where Chet's Lakeside Inn has been known to serve a pasty or two. So, Karen, was this the first 'Pasty in Space'?
Pasties have been flying out the door here in Calumet as the holiday shipping season is in full swing. It has been hard to find the time each morning to update the Pasty Cam, but we'll continue to do our best this week to go back to a morning schedule of our picture-a-day. Special thanks for today's Glimpse of the U.P. goes to Minnesota Public Radio (who first featured the story), Paul LaVanway (who tipped us off at Pasty Central), and of course to Karen Ryberg who lived the adventure and shared it with all of us.
Wow, what an interesting feature, I could not do this. A whole new theory to getting out of the kitchen!

Me neither, Janie!! Makes me dizzy just looking at her. Wonder if Karen had a microwave oven onboard.

I wonder, after washing her hair, did she stick her head out the window to dry it? Should be quick going 17,500 miles per hour.

If you don't duck you may get clocked with an apple in the third picture!

How cool is that? Washing ones hair in space. I had similar experience when I was in hospital several weeks in 2010. I have some of that hair "cleaner" left for quick shampoo jobs. And it really does clean when one can't use shower/sink for cleansing. Personally I'd think shorter hair would be worth the conviences. Neat article altogether. Thanks for brining it to us.
