Over the weekend, my grandsons were busy outside making snow forts and then protecting their fortress from the onslaught of snow balls. The Keweenaw weather was just right for playing in the snow, since there was no wind and the snow was sticking together just right for building walls and "panking" floors, not to mention superior snow ball making. The boys had a great time and so did I, although all I helped with was shoveling some snow for their fort building, when they needed more. As soon as the snow balls came out, that's when I grabbed the camera to capture the fun.

When it was time to come inside, the laughter, smiles and rosy, red cheeks, told the story of how much they enjoyed their romp in the snow. What a great way to spend a wintry Keweenaw day!

I like the bunker in the first photo...optimum snowball protection. And where is the hot chocolate?

Oh wow! That looks like so much fun! Thanks for sharing your fun in the snow with us, Mary!

I just LOVE the rosy cheeks. I remember having fun in the snow like that!

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Thursday, December 5, 2013 - 10:13 pm:

Great pictures, looks like fun and too much work at the same time, lol

the good old days!

One of those boys really knew how to build a fort ~ but he shouldn't have stood up!;>
Great shots, Mary! (no pun intended);)

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Friday, December 6, 2013 - 05:27 am:

Yes we did also build forts in the wintertime in
Hubbell way back in the '40s. We would spend many
hours during the construction, snowball fights,
bobsledding and end the evening in the house to
listen to Joe Lewis boxing and/or hot chocolate as
we played Canasta...(am I dating myself)

Sounds like you had a lot of fun, Eddyfitz.

My brothers were famous for their snowballs that they pulled your coat and shoved them down your back. Very cold on the skin!

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, December 6, 2013 - 07:49 am:

This is how kids are SUPPOSED to grow up! Well
done!!! Hat's off!

I LOVE the current view on the Main Street Calumet cam.......looks like it's snowed all the way up to the camera! Hope it doesn't snow THAT much!!

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, December 6, 2013 - 10:29 am:

Talking about rosy cheeks...I volunteer with the kindergarden children a couple days a week. And we have sort of a game, when the kids come in from recess they love to say "Grandma K" feel my cheeks,( nose or ears.) They love it when I check to see how cold they are and exclaim Brrrr! Oh how they love the attention. We're definitely having some of that COLD these days and I'm staying in. You all stay warm now.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, December 6, 2013 - 10:46 am:

Eddyfitz...you may be dating yourself and a lot of us too. But I loved winter! I practicality lived at the local ice skating rink! And of course we loved all the boys' teasing us. And "crack the whip' was the ultimate fun.

Yes, Donna and Kay, neat comments! Who of us do not
remember those ice cold rosy cheeks & noses from our
youths, with big smiles and clear lungs from
running & jumping & falling on our backs then
staring @ the sky, & playing in the healthy cold? <3

Yes, Donna & Kay - great comments! Who of us
remember from our youths, running and jumping and
falling on purpose, & falling on our backs then
staring @ the sky while snow gently falls on our
faces, & playing with clear lungs full of ice cold
outside air?! <3

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, December 6, 2013 - 03:55 pm:

Well, our snow is arriving ~ but don't think I'll play in it ~ those days are over.;> But I have my memories like the rest of you!

By Karen Benton (Nerakthenice178) on Friday, December 6, 2013 - 04:46 pm:

Wonderful photos, Mary! And reading all your posts, people, brings so many memories to mind I can't write 'em all down! The best is making snow angels in 2'-3' drifts. You didn't even need to lay all the way down - just lean into the drift and there she was!! 'Course, I was a lot shorter then. lol
