Janie, I hope you and whoever was in the car with you are fine! I hit my first (and so far only) deer when I was 19, in the piney woods of east Texas, driving my then boyfriend's Camaro, pulling his ski boat. (He didn't like to pull his boat.) I saw four deer on the other side of the highway, so I took my foot off the gas, and slowly pushed the brake. Of course all four deer crossed the road. I hit the last one of the four. It did significant damage to the right front end of the car, pushing it back, so the passenger door would not open. The car was drivable, though. The guy was just thrilled that I was driving, because his precious boat was safe. He was convinced that had he been driving, he would have jack-knifed the trailer.
They say in Michigan, that you are likely to hit a deer at least once in your lifetime. Our county sheriff put a column in last night's paper, giving people tips on how to reduce damage, etc, but do not swerve because that is how people lose control, and real injuries happen.

There's a good amount of damage to our car. The deer hit us where the driver door and front fender come together so the door doesn't open til Bob fixes it. Busted the driver's side headlight out and mangled the hood some. Just thankful it didn't come through the door's window as we have heard of that happening. Bob's opinion right after the hit was, "well we have a wrecked car and that deer won't do that again"
