When Melanie Hakala Rossi was on her way home from work just the other day, she said the moon was just so beautiful over the canal, but her camera was back at home. So, rather than let a great photo opportunity pass by, as soon as she arrived home, she grabbed her camera, climbed up on the roof and snapped this shot. Very neat with the barren branches pointing to the almost full moon, quite fall/almost winter looking, indeed.
Melanie's second photo is a familiar sight to anyone who has traveled the highway to the tip of the Keweenaw. That's the Snow Thermometer on US 41, just north of Mohawk, with Melanie's sister in the shot, too. I wonder how far up the graph that red arrow will go this year?
Speaking of winter…it has once again arrived here in the Keweenaw. As of this note typing, the ground is white here in Lake Linden, but I can still see the leaves peeking out. As my son would say, good deer tracking snow.

Have also noticed the moon shining thru the trees and clouds the last few nights ~ thanks for the beautiful shot!

The shot of the moon is great, but I'm having a hard time adjusting to the time change. Now it is totally dark by 5:00pm.

Me too, David! Shootin' the moon there, eh, Melanie? Nice shot!! Does that red arrow mark the depth at one time? If so ~ WOW!

Nice photos, thanks Melanie! I love looking at the snow thermometer and seeing that '78-'79 still has all the marbles. That was my final year at Tech and I lived out in the woods in a place you couldn't reach by road; did it all on skis or snowshoes. What an awesome winter that was!

Shirley:
I'm not sure the significance of the red arrow at about 26 feet. . . maybe last year, but last year, according to MTU Keweenaw Research Center was about 19 feet. The very top of the red thermometer is the record of 1978-79 at almost 30 feet.

Melanie must be a Spring Chicken. If I were to have the notion to climb up on the roof to take a picture of the moon, I'm guessing I'd be seeing stars instead. Gorgeous picture, Melanie.

So I wonder, where is the official location that the thermometer is reporting?
By D. A. (Midwested) on Thursday, November 21, 2013 - 07:23 pm:
Janie,
You reminded me of the song my parents always claimed as being "Their Song".
Shine on, shine on, harvest moon Up in the sky; I ain't had no lovin' Since January, February, June or July. Snow time ain't no time to stay Outdoors and spoon; So shine on, shine on, harvest moon, For me and my gal.

D.A. The snow amount is determined by the Keweenaw County Road Commission. They measure the snow near Delaware. Last year was slightly over 26 feet. snowfall
