This past Sunday and the one before that, the Shoebox Memory photos were about the top of Brockway Mountain, so when I saw these pictures from Melanie Hakala Rossi, I figured they would be a good fit for today.

Melanie relayed the story behind her photos to me and it goes like this:

My sister Lisa was here from Minneapolis for her 50th birthday. She always wanted to hike up a mountain on her 50th and since Mt. Everest was out of the question, she decided to hike up Brockway Mountain with our friend Jean. They started at the bottom near the marina; it was 4 miles to the summit. I drove up the other side and waited for them. My sister had no idea I was going to be up there, so I dressed in a scary Halloween costume and jumped out of the bushes near the top to scare her.

I thought she'd enjoy some pictures of her hike and then came up with the idea to do it without her knowing. She'll never forget this birthday. After taking some pictures of the late fall scenery up on top, I gave them a ride back down.
Sure looks different with the leaves down, but those Tamarack Larch trees stand out quite boldly with their yellow coloring, adding some beauty amidst the grayness.

Melanie also took some pictures of the signage that has been added up there. I’m not sure when they were put in, but they sure are a nice addition. I could only read the title of each board in the pictures, so I guess that means that first thing in the spring, a trip to Brockway will be in order to see what they tell about.

I hope Melanie's sister, Lisa, has a strong heart ~ first to climb that mountain then to have the wits scared of her.;>
Sounds like they had a fun time! Thanks for sharing.

'out' of her even. I knew I was typing too fast.:<

What a fantastic birthday! First she turns half a century, then scales a mountain, and finally has all the excess weight scared off her! No kidding, Melanie, that's a birthday to remember!! LOL Seriously, great photos and a great effort on your sister's part in walking up. In all the years I've been UP there, I never even thought to walk it - we were always in a rush to touch the face of God! I'll have to put that on my bucket list this year. :)

How cool is that? Great birthday celebration!

And the new signage is beautiful......a great
tribute to the things that make this place special.
Thanks Mary!!!

When I was in school at Suomi in 1966 we went up there on cross country skis. It was a nice day trip but very cold. Brockway is nice any time of year.

Not many years ago, we saw a girl rollerblading to the top, and she was almost there when we spotted her!

Nice there's still some Autumn colors in November.

Love the pictures of the Tamarack trees. We have so many of them out here and they are just gorgeous right now.

What happened to the old signs? I hope somebody has kept them.

Is the lookout over Copper Harbor fairly new? I don't recall seeing it before.
Beautiful pictures!! I really love it up on Brockway!

Anne V. Dahlstrom (Ethel) ~ I think the old signs are still there, on the side that looks out toward Lake Superior. I'm pretty sure these new signs are on the point that looks out toward Eagle Harbor. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that, please.

Renee in AL (Renee) - The lookout over Copper Harbor has always been there, but last year, in 2012, they built it up with the stone walls and signage like that. Before that it was undeveloped and just a dirt area to stop and take pictures from.
I think many years back there may have been one of those coin operated viewers to look down closer at the town, there. I seem to remember that as a kid. I know there were some at the top of Brockway then, too.
We need some pictures of those for a Shoebox Memory some Sunday!

I sure hope the old signs are still there! I love those!
