Good night

Good Morning everyone. Thank you for your good wishes for my special needs son and the state Special Olympics Soccer tournament this past weekend in Warren, Jbuck and Deb S. My son and his team won both of their games, so they placed first in their division, and he was an excited and happy camper.

We have fall-like weather here in mid-Michigan for this week: wet, windy, and cool. Stay warm and dry you all, and have a good week.

Good morning everyone!

Such wonderful news Marianne ~ so glad your son had a good time and great wins! Know he would have enjoyed it either way. Hope it was dry for the games.

Looks like rain/snow in the forecast for most of the Midwest this week. 'Bout that time of year!

Good morning!!

What great news about your son, Marianne! I bet you guys were all very excited and proud, and especially him!

Same kind of forecast here, jbuck. It snowed yesterday and I believe it's been raining ever since.

Not a good weekend for Michigan sports, except for the Wolverines and Spartans. Lions and Tigers and Red Wings went down...oh my :-(

Have a great weekend!

Weather history: Saw on the NOAA weather site that Detroit had a record LOW of 17 degrees on this date in 1974! Brrr

Winter is nearing. The north wind is blowing and the snowflakes are dancing in the air.

Winter-Time

Robert Louis Stevenson

Late lies the wintry sun a-bed,
A frosty, fiery sleepy-head;
Blinks but an hour or two; and then,
A blood-red orange, sets again.

Before the stars have left the skies,
At morning in the dark I rise;
And shivering in my nakedness,
By the cold candle, bathe and dress.

Close by the jolly fire I sit
To warm my frozen bones a bit;
Or with a reindeer-sled, explore
The colder countries round the door.

When to go out, my nurse doth wrap
Me in my comforter and cap;
The cold wind burns my face, and blows
Its frosty pepper up my nose.

Black are my steps on silver sod;
Thick blows my frosty breath abroad;
And tree and house, and hill and lake,
Are frosted like a wedding-cake.

Jarmo--Thanks for that link. I am not at all fluent in Finnish, but I
was still able to pick out some words. Since my grandmother died a
number of years ago, I haven't heard much Finnish spoken. It was
interesting to notice all of the technological changes that have
occurred since that conference took place. The only time I visited
Finland was in 1967, and I remember swimming at a huge Olympic
pool somewhere in Helsinki. When we landed at the airport, I was
struck by how much Finland looked like the Upper Peninsula and
wondered why my ancestors would have left such a beautiful place.
Some lectures at FinnFest have helped me to understand why they
did.

Marianne--Cudos to your son!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, October 21, 2013 - 09:59 pm:

Kosk, it was amazing to see the similarities between the UP and the Scandinavian countries especially Finland and Sweden when Dr Nat and I were there last year. We often said that we could see why the UP and upper midwest became inhabited by Scandinavians because it reminded them of home.

Capt. Paul: I'm sure glad those immigrants ended up in the spot
they did. A beautiful place that their relatives continue to love.

Thank you for all of your congratulations and good wishes for my special needs son. He had a great time, in spite of the cool, damp weather.
