Here in the North Country (also known as the Upper Peninsula), we've been experiencing some winter like weather for October. A number of areas around the Keweenaw have even reported up to 5" or more of snow having fallen this past week, where other areas have had just a white covering on the grassy areas. Seems kind of strange to have that much snow in one place and 15 miles away, none. That's how the weather here in the U.P. works though.

Today's photos, taken by Shawn Malone, are representative of the Marquette area weather this past week, showing snow squalls over Lake Superior as a storm front approaches land. Her description of the first photo was "dramatic morning". Then pointing out the center left of the photo, she said the erosion you see there is 10 ft. high already and she expected this storm would wash more of the beach away that day.

The second photo snapped by Shawn, shows a snow squall out over Lake Superior, which she said really blackened the sky as it came closer to land. By the looks of the grass and leaves in the photo, I'd venture to say it was quite windy at this point already, too. I'd have to say that 'dramatic', is the perfect descriptive word for both of these shots! Thanks for sharing the storms with us, Shawn!

It remains to be seen, whether this winter like weather is here to stay or not. I'm still hoping for a few days of above-normal temperatures before winter really sets in and the ground stays white. A girl can dream, right?

Several times on our U.P. snowmobile vacations Bob & I have parked along Lake Superior and watched lake effect snowstorms moving in. Fascinating to watch!

across the lake from our home in Eagle River when we
lived there in the 70's & 80's.
