The weather here UP North lately has been producing some beautiful scenes and today's trio of photos from Philip Odum are prime examples.
Philip was recently at the Whitefish Point Lighthouse at just the right time to capture the first shot of the campus surrounded by the full arc of a rainbow. I love how the sky is dark, yet the buildings are illuminated with the sun. I'm guessing this was as the sun was beginning to set.
In the second photo, the rainbow is actually out over Lake Superior and it looks like the freighter is on its way to find the pot of gold that is rumored to be at the end. In my opinion, Lake Superior is the U.P.'s pot of gold, so I guess the freighter in this photo really did find it after all.
The last shot was snapped after the sun had gone down enough to just put a blush on the clouds and leave a trail of bright light just below them. I'm not sure if that is the same freighter in both photos, but it made me stop to think about the beautiful scenes the sailors on board must see on a daily basis when they're out on Lake Superior. Of course they also get to see the Big Lake at her very worst, too. I hope the beauty outweighs the rough times.

Mary, when one sails for a year they generally see the good and the bad. Some images are still imbeded in my mind after being off of the Big Lake for 55 years.

I have been there twice and neither was as lovely as this. Once the fog was so thick you could bearly see 200 feet. The winds are strong there but I know the light tower does not list to the left and neither does the fog signal building. I wonder what lense he used to get the effect.

Pretty familiar with this location, and I think these are all morning/ sunrise shots based on the sun angle. Very nice!
