Recently, Melanie Hakala Rossi found herself in the peace and quiet (except for the sounds of Superior) out on the tip of the Keweenaw. You might think that there isn't much to see out there, since it has not been developed and is at the end of a pretty rough road. But if you've never been out there, you're missing a lot.
Melanie's photos here today, illustrate that quite well. First there's Gull Rock Lighthouse, located out on the south side of Manitou Island. She's even pretty, in a haunting kind of way, when surrounded by fog.
The next shot is one of the views you'll get as leave the "beaten path" (M-26) behind. Spectacular! I can only imagine what this spot will look like when the leaves are in full fall colors.
On a windy day, you get treated to some rolling waves out there. Just look at the clarity of the water as it rolls along. The very edge of the curl, looks almost like it's bordered in crystals.
Melanie's last shot, is one of the main reasons she likes to go out there on the tip. Agate hunting is at its best on Superior's shoreline here, since it is a 'road less traveled' and the way in and out is quite rough in spots. That sure is a great collection of Lake Superior agates, Melanie's reward for 4 hours spent rock hounding at High Rock Bay.

FANTASTIC photos, and boy...that IS a rough road (WAY back when...a friend drove out there in a 4 wheel drive pickup, and it took 45 mins to go 13- 14 miles)....but getting out to High Rock is a must!
...and Happy 47th, Mikie! Time does fly (when you’re having fun) :-)
