Folks who follow our Marine Traffic map will want to watch. For this week's Shoebox Memory of the U.P. we call on one of the biggest 'shoeboxes' on the web, a place where stacks of old memories are stored, the archives of Youtube, uploaded by Boatnerd. This 2000 mini-documentary of a Soo Locks passage uses timelapse sequences, mixed with realtime, to illustrate how these huge vessels are pushed up and let down to make it to the next level. Wow :^O
First day of Autumn! With temps hitting freezing last night in parts of the U.P., we think it's safe to ramp up our pasty shipping season this week. In case you hadn't noticed, the pasty order counter started whirring again on Friday, on its was to three quarters of a million pasties shipped throughout all 50 states. Of course, instead of freighter cargo, our packages mostly leave the U.P. by FedEx air or ground vehicles.
And if you haven't visited Boatnerd lately, you might want to stop by and enter to win an actual trip on a Great Lakes freighter!
Good Day! Beautiful photos of the freighters passing through the locks. Great point of view!

Almost like looking out the windshield of the long front end of a 1976 Ford Elite!

Never, ever get tired of the freighters! Thanks, Charlie.

Aw, Charlie, that's downright cruel! I was all excited about winning a trip on a freighter, but the drawing was September 13!

What a job it must be to pilot that beast in the first photo.

I just noticed that there is a video. How cool was that? Thanks for technology, the time and the effort.
