A little over 4 years ago our family here in Eagle River was adopted by a loveable Newfee-Black Lab mix we named "Shadow" (the third in a series of Copper Country Humane Society Alumni). You may have seen him on these pages, exploring the Keweenaw with us in every season - walking the colorful dunes in the Fall, helping us scoop the drifts in Winter, enjoying new blossoming life in Spring, and playing with the grandkids during their U.P. Summer visits. Just last month Shadow appeared in a shot like the final one above, entitled We'll All Miss You.
We're missing him already.
He peacefully left us on Thursday after a very rapid decline over the previous week. He had minor surgery early last year, with the prognosis that cancer could return, so his departure didn't come as a complete surprise. It just came too soon.
I'll especially miss our morning walks and regular routine during the day. Shadow was like a trainer, reminding us often to get up and get moving. The memory of his enthusiasm and zest for life will warm our hearts for a long time.
It has been our mission to bring "A Glimpse of Life from the U.P." for over 15 years. The people, the places, the history often quietly include four-legged friends, sometimes hardly even noticed. We appreciate each one, and thank the folks at the Copper Country Humane Society for all they do.
Have a good week :o)
