Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat (a.k.a. Paul and Nat Brandes) stopped by the Marquette State Fish Hatchery and Research Station, while they were here UP North, to see what goes on with the fish breeding. They were given a tour of the facility and were treated to views of the various breeder fish that the hatchery raises to stock both the inland lakes and the Great Lakes waters. They raise Brook Trout and Rainbow Trout there, plus they have indoor and outdoor interpretive areas for the public to come and tour, to find out more about the hatchery and what it does.

If you can't get there yourself, but would like more information, check out the following link: Dept. of Natural Resources

This is a 20 page PDF file, with the history of the hatchery, from 1922 to 1972:

Very cool. We saw an awful lot of trout rivers while on the North Shore this weekend. In some of the rivers, you couldn't keep a brook trout unless it was 20" long. WOW!!!

Thanks for sharing your day with us Capt & Dr :-)

Thanks for featuring the Hatchery and our photos Mary, despite many will not see them because of the time it got uploaded.....

One small correction; the Hatchery raises Brook and Lake Trout as well as Splake (the Brook/Lake cross), but not Rainbows. We were fortunate in that we got to see the breeder stock raceways which were closed at the time, but one of the workers let us in briefly which allowed us to see the big fish, including two albino Lake Trout, complete with pink eyes.

I always check to see what I may have not seen so I do not miss a day at Pasty.com

Capt. & Dr., I'd say that's a fisherman's nightmare ~ all those fish and 'no fishing' allowed.;>
Neat pix!
