Good morning Mikie and Jbuck!! Beautiful here today, too. I'm thinking the humidity is going to be a little lower today.

Have a great day!!

Hot and humid; story of my life currently.....

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, August 29, 2013 - 08:58 am:

Great slideshow. It brought back a lot of memories. Loved the Canyon Falls pictures, and white caps on the Lake is a really great shot! Saw a lot of great movies in Chassell at the drive-in theatre there. We still have one out here. And I've sure had my fair share of ice cream cones from that Eagle River store. The double rainbow happened out here while we were in the UP. Many of my friends posted it on Facebook. Was sorry to have missed that, but was happy I was where I was.

Have a great day, everybody!

Any of you 'pasty-camers' planning to take the Big Mac 'bridge walk'? Bet it'll be so hot you'll want to head to Canyon Falls ~ or the Big Lake afterwards!

By Waveaction (Lakelover) on Thursday, August 29, 2013 - 04:20 pm:

The warm temps, 83°, are finally leaving the UP. That stupid south wind is going to be coming out of the north, like it should be.

Got a lot of activities going on in Ontonagon;

Also wanted to thank mickill mouse (Ram4)for the great link. It was beautiful

Have only done the Bridge Walk a couple times and
won't be able to this year. Had 4 years headed to
NMU on Labor Day when we drove across while others
walked!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, August 29, 2013 - 08:28 pm:

Hi everyone. I know this is late, but I want to share something at least some of you might be interested in. This morning, when I opened Michigan Tech's web cams page, I saw the Ranger, which I haven't seen all summer for whatever reason. It looked like it had just come under the Lift Bridge, and the Lift Bridge had just closed. I was curious to see where it "parked", in Houghton or in Hancock, as I had heard it was moving to Hancock this year, but apparently not. What I got for my time was an incredible show! Normally, what I have seen in the past, is the Ranger's turning around and "parking" in maybe 15 minutes, but not this morning. I really don't know if they had massive steering issues, or if they were trying to train a new crew member to "drive it", or what. But, they spent an incredible 1 hour and 45 minutes, of the crew's trying to get that boat into its parking place this morning! Yes, I watched it, mainly because I hadn't seen it all summer, and I missed it. Ironically, in the end, when they finally parked it, either with the steering mechanism fixed, or the normal pilot or whatever, driving it, they put it up expertly, in no time at all! It was really very interesting. During this time, my husband was trying to tell me a long convoluted story at the time, and he couldn't understand why I was so fascinated by the ship, lol. Someday (after over 40 years of marriage), maybe he will actually understand that I can truly multitask.:-)

Maybe we will eventually hear what was actually going on with the Ranger on Thursday morning, April 29th, and why they had to try for such a long time to get it docked! Thanks for listening to me, if you read this far. Have a good evening!

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, August 29, 2013 - 08:45 pm:

Marianne ~ I'm just speculating here, but the Ranger doesn't usually come in from the Island in the morning, as it takes six hours to cross from Isle Royale and that would make it early afternoon, if it left there at 7 or 8, so it was probably a training run or something on that order.
Again, I'm just guessing on that, though. ;-)

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Thursday, August 29, 2013 - 09:12 pm:

Marianne: To answer your question about the RIII, we were not coming back from the island this morning but were practicing retrieving a man overboard with a new system which we just obtained. Like anything new it requires drills and practice for the captain and crew to become proficient.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, August 29, 2013 - 09:19 pm:

Marianne, I was gonna guess a woman 'driver' ~ we tend to have problems parallel parking'.;>
G'night, all.

By Jose (Jtraveler) on Thursday, August 29, 2013 - 10:13 pm:

Shirley Waggoner, my wife and I leave for Mackinac in the morning. We're walking the Mighty Mac on Labor Day, 7:00 sharp, rain or shine. They're forecasting a high of 67° and a 30% chance of rain, but a little rain wouldn't stop us from walking. Have you ever done "the walk"?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, August 30, 2013 - 08:39 am:

Afraid I have never taken the 'walk', Jose ~~ may have something to do with my fear of heights and water.;>
Sounds like you'll have good weather! Enjoy!

Need a U.P. fix! looking like the week of 9/16...Marquette here I come!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, August 30, 2013 - 09:49 am:

Thank you, DaveofMohawk and Mary! I was really puzzled. A drill for man overboard with new equipment makes sense. :-)

Now Shirley, that's not fair, LOL. I passed the parallel parking part of my Texas driving test, when I got my full license at age 14! (We could back then, if parents signed that they needed me to have it, and that I was mature enough to drive at that age. The laws have long since changed. I'm glad my sons weren't eligible at 14, for sure, because they weren't mature enough to drive at that age!) Also, I parallel parked my Suburban in downtown Midland the very first time I tried, back when we had parallel parking spaces downtown. I know there is a bunch of nonsense being said about women drivers, but...although it may apply to some, it certainly doesn't apply to all. :-) Women have far fewer injury and fatal accidents than men, whether it is in the US or Great Britain, according to insurance statistics. I know you were kidding, but I had to set the record straight for others. :-)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, August 30, 2013 - 10:14 am:

Sorry, Marianne, I had my tongue in my cheek when I wrote that.;) I've always prided myself in being a very good driver. I learned to drive by backing up and pulling forward in our driveway when I was 13/14 ~ got a learner's permit at age 15, full license at 16 because that was the law in TN. And btw, I learned to drive with straight shift, which was not as easy as automatic.
I agree with you about (most) women's driving records. Hope I'm back in your good graces.:)

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Friday, August 30, 2013 - 10:44 am:

Jose ~ My hubby and I did the walk, back in 2003. We enjoyed it thoroughly, staying on the Mackinaw City side the night before and taking the School Bus across the bridge to St. Ignace in the early morning to begin the walk. We'd like to do it again, one of these years, as it is an amazing experience to be walking that high above the water, looking through the grates of the bridge. I even took pictues through those grates...ha, ha!

My driving experience started when I was 7 on an Allis Chalmers D-17 in the fields and gravel roads between our farms.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, August 30, 2013 - 11:48 am:

By yourself, Janie? Talk about changing gears!!:O

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, August 30, 2013 - 12:38 pm:

The first few times with dad riding on the fender, but after that I went solo. When Bob and I bought a tractor after dad's were sold off at his estate sale, we got a Allis Chalmers D-17.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, August 30, 2013 - 01:55 pm:

One of my aunts, whose husband was a farmer, bought a new Ford utility tractor back in the early '50s ~ so she could visit him out in the fields ~ and she was more proud of that tractor than she would've been with a brand new Cadillac.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, August 30, 2013 - 04:06 pm:

You were never out of my good graces, because I knew you were teasing. :-) I just wanted to set the record straight possibly for some others who might have gotten the wrong idea. That has been a hot topic around this summer for some reason.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, August 30, 2013 - 04:10 pm:

Janie, I learned to drive on my uncle's tractors in northwest Iowa. Back then, if you miscounted and were off by just one row of beans, say, cultivated, you could plow up a quarter of an acre or more in a heartbeat. That would cost a lot of money in a hurry. I was probably 9 or 10 when I started driving tractors, with someone's watchful eye.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, August 30, 2013 - 09:15 pm:

I learned on M-94 South of Shingleton at age ten. One day I hit eighty MPH in our '65 Chevy Impala...my mother almost had a heart attach and so did I when she screamed.

Front passing thru SE-MI right now with one heck of a thunder & lightning show.
