Good morning, everyone! We had a pretty wild night out on the dune last night when that line of thunderstorms came across. Lots of wind, horizontal rain, lightning, poor sheltie going nuts like he always does in a storm. I wonder if I'll ever be able to convince him that his imaginary sheep always ride out the storms just fine.

Thanks, Charlie!! I love this site :-)

Dunerat, "imaginary sheep", that's funny! Although I'm sure it wasn't for your sheltie....bless his heart!:(
My daughter and s-i-l have a German Shorthair that reacts the same way in storms.

Many years ago, one of our little Lhasa Apsos suddenly became terrified of thunderstorms. It was shortly after lightning apparently struck our hurricane fence, about 15 feet from our house, while we were at work, but our babysitter was home with our then very young sons. That lightning strike somehow knocked out our television and our ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) sacrificing itself, but saving our KitchenAid mixer and microwave, both of which were plugged into it. When I bought the GFCI at the Safety Store, I thought it was too expensive to buy, at $50 in the late 1970's dollars, but it worked like a champ when we needed it to! Our two other Lhasas were fine, but that one little dog was terrified of thunderstorms forever after that, even though she had never been afraid of thunderstorms before it.

Marianne, maybe you should get your little doggie a 'thunder-shirt'. That's what daughter got for their "Spencer"...and it works!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, August 23, 2013 - 11:29 am:

Thank you for the suggestion of the ThunderShirt. Since this was in the late 1970's, that little girl has long-since departed us, like by 20-some years, though. We haven't had a dog since our first little Sunny, who ever got scared of thunder, though. I'm glad you mentioned it, for others whose dogs might be afraid of it. Honestly, I'm not sure if dogs become afraid of the loud booms from thunder, or if they can sense the electrical charge changes in the atmosphere. I have read of many dogs that the ThunderShirt has helped, though.

Will be U.P. in the Keweenaw/Marquette hopefully in Sept. for business and a bit of fresh air pleasure I hope!
Our trip east, and the Cape, and U.P. the coast to Bar Harbor was beautiful, and we really had a great time and Maine looks a lot like the Keweenaw....but... I STILL PREFER THE U.P. AND LAKE SUPERIOR! (and always will)

Have a great weekend all !!!!

Marianne, our dog Rocco is afraid of TS and rain as well, I've never heard of a "Thunder-Shirt" before? I just hold him and break out his favorite treat, Jack Links original beef jerky.

Nice review today, love that 2005 pic, wish I was there right now!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, August 23, 2013 - 12:10 pm:

Marianne, I'm so sorry your little sweetie is no longer around. I've often wondered the same thing about the electrical charges in the air. I think it also affects kitties. My "Tippy" is okay with storms most of the time, but when he acts 'strange', I get worried too.:(
Welcome back, Uncle Chuck! Yep, those shirts really work.....get one for Rocco.

Here is one link to the Thundershirt:

http://www.thundershirt.com/

I have read reviews of it a number of places. If you have a dog who is afraid of thunder, then it might be worth a try, since you can't always be there for him during thunderstorms. :-) (I have not had a need for one since I first heard of them, so I do not have a firsthand experience, but I have read about them in a number of different places.)
