Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 07:51 am:

My grandsons recently had a fun time learning some history lessons about life in the Keweenaw, way back when. Best part of the experience, is that they had such a fun time doing so, they didn't even realize they were learning.

Their first stop was at the Delaware Mine, to go underground and check out what it was like to be a miner back when the copper mines were in operation around these parts. They pretended to use the drills, loaded the copper in carts and even had a make believe lunch at the picnic tables provided for the miners to eat their lunches on each day.

When they came back out into the light of day and were warmed up again, they headed to Copper Harbor, to check out life at Fort Wilkins. Again, plenty of historic information was passed on to them about living at the Fort when there were no modern conveniences like we have now-a-days. I like that the barracks and housing displays at the Fort are now more interactive, like in the photos of the boys cooking and getting ready for their evening meal. I remember going as a youngster and you were only able to look at everything from a glassed-off doorway.

Thanks for today's photos, goes to the boy's Mom, Mariah Fontaine, who snapped all but one of the photos. The one of the parade grounds at the Fort, with the cannon and flagpole, was snapped by my 11 year old grandson. I think we may have a budding photographer in the family!

Nice pics...looks like Capt. has some competition on his heels.

By Allen W. Philley (Allen) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 09:16 am:

Natural Beauty, history and fun all in the Keweenaw.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 09:33 am:

Nice looking young men there!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 09:33 am:

Thought the first photo might be Dr. Nat and the Capt.;>
Sweet grandsons, Mary!

By Just me (Jaby) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 09:57 am:

Great pics today as always. I think I recognize those two handsome young guys!

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 10:24 am:

Neat pictures, Mary. Thank you!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 10:51 am:

Knew who they were from the first picture before reading about them. Nice pictures, good looking kids. Feel sorry for people with ugly grandkids.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 11:03 am:

LOL Mikie...maybe we should start a special fund :-)

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 11:48 am:

Combine that special fund with the red headed step child...just sayin.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 01:19 pm:

Nope, not us. We haven't been to Delaware or Adventure yet, but maybe Saturday we'll head in one of those directions. We have found a lot of the old explorations in the Peninsula on this trip, but I have promised Mary not to post them right away because I'm sure she has something in mind for later..... ;-)

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 04:01 pm:

Capt. Paul...was nice to run into you today at work! :)

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 07:50 pm:

ALL CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN ARE BEAUTIFUL...I feel sorry for the people, who 'feel sorry for the people with ugly grandkids.' I am just sayin'

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 09:23 pm:

I haven't been to the Deleware Mine in ages! Need to go exploring the Keweenaw more before I move :)

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 09:31 pm:

I have to agree with mickill. Even if Janie is talking with her tongue in her cheek, I don't care for "red-headed step-children". I have many red heads and step children in my family and I really don't like that whole term. Only just heard that phrase recently and am put out by it, even as a joke. Whatever....Just saying.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 - 10:37 pm:

Contrary to popular belief, Danielle is not a bad kid!!! Great finally meeting you as well; maybe we'll run into you again before we leave...

By FJL (Langoman) on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 - 08:39 am:

If it looks like a chat and sounds like a chat it must be a chat........

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 - 08:46 am:

Kay, by birth I am a blonde and still am thanks to my hair dresser. I love the blonde jokes that come my way.! If I didn't I would probably be a very miserable being. You have any blonde jokes or chats send them my way. I would love to hear them. P.S. I have red heads, step kids and bi-racial in my family. Have a good day! :)

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 - 09:04 am:

Mary, if you need to, remove my post. Not a problem with me! Thanks!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 - 09:21 am:

I'm a natural redhead but find no offense in that term....it's just a saying.;>

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 - 10:13 pm:

I agree with Shirley and Janie. Everything is tongue in cheek. It's nice that some people can take a joke. (Janie, I'll be sending you some blonde jokes :-) )

I recognized those boys right away too. Good looking kids, Mary. LOL, Mikie!!

FJL, you crack me up :-) There seems to be a lot of chats on here, but nobody seems to mind. We're all one big, happy family, right????

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, August 9, 2013 - 07:50 pm:

can anybody imagine these words being said to a child and not an adult?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, August 9, 2013 - 08:07 pm:

Well, they weren't. I doubt anybody who posts on here would ever do that.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, August 9, 2013 - 08:37 pm:

nobody said that Deb, it is just 'imagine' something like that being said to a 'child' not an adult.

I said that because all the people who are posting saying 'they' are not offended by that, are adults. As I was growing up, I was always teased because I was always taller than the rest of the kids. Now, as an adult, I do not care.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, August 9, 2013 - 09:40 pm:

My youngest son was always teased because he was smart. Can you believe that? It made him TRY to do poorly in school. Kids are cruel to each other. It seems there's always something that makes us unlikeable to somebody else. I used to tell him that they were just jealous because they didn't do as well in school as he did, always calling him "school boy" over and over. We had a tough time getting through that phase. My other son was teased because he was overweight. It gave him a terrible self-esteem. The sticks & stones thing really isn't true when you're a child :-(

Hopefully, we outgrow "caring" what people say about us. Good for you for doing just that, Mickill!!
