Good morning! Question -- can anyone tell me if there's a road that connects Munising to Grand Marais? (kinda hugging the lakeshore) or would we have to drive along M28 and then take 77 north to grand marais? Seems like a long trip although I'm sure the scenery is lovely. Thanks!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, July 12, 2013 - 08:36 am:

George, County Highway H-58 is the road you're looking for!
Wikipedia does a pretty good job of explaining what you'll along this route.

Good Morning from Copper Harbor. Been in the harbor since Wedensday and one more day until we have to go home. Just got back from my morning walk around the harbor, and it looks like it will be another great day to be in the Copper Country.

Two summers ago we stopped at National Park headquarters in Munising and picked up a park brochure with map. then we followed a lot of dirt roads through the park and attached area and came out on M-77. we had a pick up truck but I don't remember it being a bad road.

Thanks Capt Paul! I'm assuming it's a paved road(?) And you're heading UP in 8 days? Excellent! I haven't been back to the UP since 1971. Bringing wife, daughter & son-in-law, none of whom have ever seen the big lakes. They'll want to relocate from CT after our visit, methinks....

Thanks Capt Paul!! Perfect!! So looking forward to our UP visit.

Good Morning from a beautiful, blue skies, sunshine, temps in the mid 70's, and breezy day in Eastern Iowa!!

Jim seems to me we drove our pickup along that way from our county camp ground in Grand Maries but ran out of blacktop road. So we turned around cause we weren't sure how far we dared to go without good/correct gears? (I'm not one for truck lingo) It was so peaceful and beautiful tho. Good luck and let us know how you do. I like to think of the little town of Grand Marie and that area as my secret treasure.

George good luck and have a grand time on Your UP trip. I envy you. As I said don't expect all paved roads but do the best you can. It's been a few years since I've been there last. I do remember some beautiful sand dunes that could be great photos with shadows and shapes especially late or early in the day. Have fun.

H-58 between Munising and Grand Marais was fully paved in I believe 2010. I drove it in 2011 with my low clearance car and had no issues. It is a very pretty drive; I can only imagine what it must be like in Autumn.....

Got Chassell strawberries today. I can't believe how they have filled the house with their sweet aroma. Going to cut 2 quarts up, add sugar and let them make their own syrup. Strawberry shortcakes, here we come. Chassell was booming. It was so nice to see everyone enjoying a perfect day.

Hope you all had a picture, perfect day, we did, so did Chassell.

Good question, George. When we were at Pictured Rocks a few years ago, I wanted to go to Grand Marais but didn't want to drive all the way around. We were heading that way from ST. Ignace and thought about hitting Grand Marais first, but then didn't want to have to drive out of our way on the way to Munising, either. Thanks for asking that. And of course, thanks to the good Capt for knowing the answer, as always :-)

Great pictures, as always. 3 weeks from today we'll be on our way UP. Can't wait! Well, I can wait because I don't want summer to fly by either, lol.

H 58 from Munising to Grand Marais in 20 miles of
winding twisty road.
