Calumet Waterworks is THE place to be when the temperatures are soaring and even when they aren't all that hot, it's still a great place to go to do some rock hounding. I can't say for sure, but I think that's what Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat Brandes did when they arrived here in the Keweenaw for a visit. They haven't disclosed to me, whether they were successful with their agate search on these shores. It really doesn't matter if they were, though, because in my opinion, being there on the shores of Lake Superior is a treasure all its own. Finding agate treasures there is an exciting bonus!

Thanks for taking us all with you on your vacation!

Great pictures!! The countdown is on.....5 more days!! My son and his family will also be going up so I can't wait to spend some time in the sand with the 3 little ones. Sure do hope the weather cooperates, but if it doesn't, that's okay too!!

Short answer to agates: no, but we weren't looking either. ;-)

On our way to Marquette right now to do some "fun work" looking at more geology and taking lots of photos; maybe some of those will make the CamNotes as well.....

Wishing we were there too!

Enjoy your time in the CC, Dr. Nat & Capt. Paul!

My Grandparents had a place just down the road from
Waterworks park. The sunsets were wonderful. I
think I may have thrown a few thousands of rocks in
the lake (great skipping stones on the shore) and
spent summer days in the lake.

Thanks for the pic today reminds me of those days.

Great pics! I just love the Lake Superior rocks and have to bring home a few every time I visit the shore.

I hear ya, Deb S.! Wifey and I are leaving (driving, no less) Thursday from CT for the UP, altho not going all the way to the copper country, but to Munising/Grand Marais/Soo/Mackinaw Island. Absolutely cannot wait! You're right, even if weather's not 100%, it won't matter!

I know I'm posting in the Bermuda Triangle time period (where everything gets lost and/or not seen which is basically the same thing)but when did the steps get put in? it seems those are going in everywhere. Great Sand Bay has them now and now Buckys. Good grief! The Keewenaw is going all user friendly. They're finally trying to accommodate everyone. Good pics!

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Monday, July 29, 2013 - 09:23 pm:

The steps were already there when I moved here in 2001.

Speaking of staircases:

Last month I really got a kick out of the Great
Sand Bay giant staircase that was installed right
next to what had to be an older sign that stated
"No Beach Access". The sign was still there and of
course was originally intended to keep people from
walking down the steep dune. But I think they put
that staircase there just to challenge me ignore
the sign.

Also a question about the Calumet Waterworks park.
Is it on the bay that can be considered part of
Cedar Bay?

my moms parents had a cabin right-smack-dab, next to waterworks. she said she always loved going there to get away from calumet and had a great time just walking up and down the beach.
