Jeff and Chris Dennis and family, recently made the 5 hour drive from their home in the Keweenaw, to the Straits of Mackinac, jumped on a ferry boat and spent a few days on Mackinac Island. They enjoyed touring the Island, both on foot and on three wheels, a different version of the bicycle built for two.

I love the first shot of brother and sister checking out Lake Huron and the rocks on the shore, while Dad is taking in the big picture, with the Mackinac Bridge way off in the distance.
They had a wonderful view of the main street from their hotel balcony and I'm betting were serenaded by the clip-clop of the horse hooves as they pulled the taxis and wagons by below.
Another excursion they went on, was a visit to the Grand Hotel, famous for having the longest porch in the world. After snapping a few photos on the grounds, they went inside for a lunch buffet, which Jeff reports, was "very nice".
I'm not sure how far the family rode on the bicycles built for two, perhaps right around the 8 mile perimeter of the island, but I think the kids got the better deal on these bikes. It looks like they can pedal, but I'm not sure their pedaling helps the bike go any faster.

Mackinac Island is a magical place, where you can enjoy yourself, while teaching your kids a bit of history at the same time. Thanks for sharing your family trip with us all, Jeff and Chris!

Nice to revisit one of our favorite U.P. places. Edie and I enjoyed a stay at the Grand Hotel in the off season a few years back.

Just an update on Edie's progress... Healing from her surgery is going well here in Petoskey. We had hoped to go home today, but she has developed some complications that will extend our stay here, at least another day. She sends her thanks for all who have expressed their get-well wishes and prayers. Hopefully we'll be seeing the Grand Hotel across the Straits before the week is out :o)

Excellent pics! Charlie, maybe you and Edie should find a doctor on Mackinaw Island next time :-)

The little girl in photo 5 looks like she was just told that she'll have to sweep that l-o-n-g porch.;) Wonderful place for family time!!
Edie and Charlie, may you soon be home-bound!!

So happy that everything went well with Edie. Is
there still a boat that has a dinner cruise, leaving
from Houghton or Hancock ?

I love visiting Mackinac Island, especially visiting The Butterfly House. http://www.originalbutterflyhouse.com

Be safe on the drive back, Charlie, and continue healing, Edie!! Will be UP next week - hope you beat me there!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 - 05:49 pm:

That's pretty, Thomas. I wonder if there's still a butterfly house in Mackinaw City ~ it's been 13 years since we were there.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 - 08:50 pm:

To my understanding, Shirley, the one in Mackinaw City moved to Mackinac Island, and is part of a carriage tour where the carriages stop for a break and people can visit what is called the Wings of Mackinac. http://www.wingsofmackinac.com/ I've been in it, and it's nice, but I'm still drawn to the Butterfly House.

What fun pictures of Mackinac Island. We love to visit the island, but we have not been there in quite a few years. I wish it were a lot more accessible for handicapped people, so we could return. Thank you for the virtual visit today.

Sending best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to you, Edie. I hope you and Charlie can get back to Copper Country. Petoskey is a really nice place to be, though, when you can't be UP there!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, July 25, 2013 - 06:48 pm:

Thanks, Thomas, I was off-line when you posted that. I did wonder if it was the same one. Such a pretty display!
