If you're new to Pasty Central, let me invite you to catch Day in History, in addition to the daily picture and chat on the Pasty Cam. Today's Day in History recalls Earnest Hemingway, who loved Northern Michigan, both Upper and Lower Peninsulas. This weekend my wife and I happen to be in one of Hemingway's favorite towns. If you google 'Petoskey Hemingway' you'll find numerous links about the author's activities here, and the role Petoskey played in his writing and career.
Edie and I have enjoyed doing Day in History for several years. She has done most of the research for the topics, and I produce the one minute feature. If you missed our earlier note on the What'sUP page, let me bring you up to speed about our current visit to Petoskey.
The story really begins almost 50 years ago. That's when Edie became diabetic and began requiring daily insulin shots. Before our wedding over 40 years ago, the doctor who did the physical for the marriage license, also gave me a pretty sobering assessment. He said - statistically speaking - my young wife would probably not make it past age 35. Thankfully through the years there have been improvements in treatment and understanding of diabetes, and Edie has had a very healthy and normal life.
About 18 years ago Edie had some difficulty with an infection in one of her toes that just wouldn't heal. She had to wear a big orthopedic boot for several years, receiving unsuccessful treatment from a number of doctors in the Copper Country. Then about 15 years ago we were referred to Dr. Deery at the Burns Clinic with Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Dr. Deery made some basic changes in treating the condition, and within 3 weeks her foot was as good as new. The last 15 years Edie has enjoyed excellent health and use of her feet.
Recently when a new foot infection appeared, we again traveled to Petoskey. This time it involved surgery and some hospital time. The surgery and healing has gone well, but allergic reaction to antibiotics has landed Edie back in the hospital. Hopefully by mid-week we will be able to make that pleasant return trip over the Mighty Mac, across US-2, past Blaney Park and the Seney Stretch, beyond Munising and Marquette, all the way back home to the Copper Country.
Thanks for all the prayers and well-wishes Edie has been receiving from our Pasty friends and visitors. This side-trip comes at an especially busy time in the U.P., as we are in the middle of a major upgrade of the broadband network in the Keweenaw. Also, thanks for the patience and understanding of our Pasty.NET members back home, as I understand there have been some lightning and weather related issues the staff has been working on. Hopefully I'll rejoin that crew in just a few days, and hopefully Edie can resume her work behind the scenes with the Pasty Cam.
Edie and you, Charlie are in my sincere thoughts. The Diabetes has invaded Edie but you both are combatting it together. True to your vows for better for worse, sickness and in health. Blessings in health to you both!

Charlie, I meant to thank you for today's pictures ~ noticed the one of Petoskey was exactly 100 years before we visited there the first time.

Thanks for all of the work you, Edie, Mary, and the rest of the Pasty crew do every day to brighten our days with a glimpse of the U.P. Best wishes for a quick recovery for Edie. She's so lucky to have such a devoted husband and best friend at her side.

Dr. H. Gunner Deery is one of THE best Infectious Disease doctors in the State. I worked with him for many years as a Microbiology technologist at Northern Michigan Hospital before I left Michigan for a Benedictine monastery in Duluth, and cannot say enough good things about him. He is smart, dedicated, loving and compassionate, and regales his patients with jokes to take their mind off what he is doing to their diabetic foot infections. Dr. Deery, if you are reading this I want you to know how much I miss you and the other ID doctors. Blessings on your ministry!

Edie & Charlie, So glad you were lead to Dr. Deery and that he is taking such good care of Edie. We pray that the improvement continues and that you will enjoy that mid-week trip home with the peace that all is well and back on track for another 15 years of great health. You certainly are blessed for taking good care of each other and keeping those vows of "in sickness and in health". God bless you both!

Wow, I knew something had to be amiss with all those late pictures of the day. I've been so confused...
Anyway, hope Edie is all better really soon and you are both back UP where you're supposed to be.
