Unless you have your own boat to head out on Lake Superior, one of the only ways you'll get an up close view of the two lighthouses on either end of Manitou Island, off the tip of the Keweenaw, is by taking a Sunset Cruise aboard the Isle Royale Queen IV. That's just what Susan Hooker did recently, where she snapped a few photos for the rest of us that were not on board, to enjoy.

Susan's first shot shows the Manitou Island Lighthouse, that is located on the eastern end of the Island. This light cannot be seen from the Keweenaw mainland at the tip. So taking the cruise gets you a grand view of this historic light.

The tour continues around to the southern side of the Island where you get to see Gull Rock Lighthouse close-up. This light is located on a small outcropping of rock, a half mile off the western end of Manitou Island and about 2 ½ miles from the western tip of the Keweenaw. It is also visible, although distantly, from High Rock Bay at the tip.

The bottom photo is what the Sunset Cruise is all about...a fantastic view of the sun as it sets over the tip of the Keweenaw, silhouetting Gull Rock Lighthouse in the process. When talking sunsets, it doesn't get much better than this.
