When E. Neil Harri says he's going for a ride, it doesn't always mean on the highway. Many times it means he's going to take to the air, like he did this day, flying right over the tip of the Keweenaw.

In case you need a bit of perspective for the photos, Neil's first shot is taken looking out towards Manitou Island, which is off the tip of the Keweenaw point. The two lakes you can see are Hoar Lake (closer) and Schlatter Lake (closer to the tip). In the lower left portion of the photo, you can see a faint white border along the shore, that's the mouth of the Montreal River and Falls. I was thinking of adding arrows to the photo, but didn't want to take away from the beauty of the shot. So instead, here's a link to Google Maps of this particular area: Google Maps - Keweenaw Tip.

Neil's second photo was taken looking back toward the tip of the Keweenaw, probably from somewhere over near Manitou Island. This angle gives you a better view of Schlatter Lake, with the small island in the middle of it. Over on the left side of this photo, you can see a faint gray area, back about an inch from the tip. That is the area that burned back in August, 2006. Neil was there fire-spotting for the workers on the ground and we featured his photos back then. You can access them by clicking here: August 16, 2006.
Amazing how 7 years later, the "fire footprint" is still there.

Thanks for taking us flying, Neil!

Once again, Neil, you come through with 'flying' colors! Thanks for the wonderful view!

These photos make me wish I was out at High Rock Bay or Keystone taking a dip in Superior, don't forget the shampoo! lol

The first photo shows Fish Cove just right of the Montreal River. That is a beautiful and secluded spot.

Beautiful views.

I was fishing off the Mouth of the Montreal today. Only two lake trout but great day to spend in a boat.
The first photo is similar to one of my images used for the top of the "Welcome to Keweenaw" sign in Allouez. I thought it showed the essence of the county without highlighting any one commercial area.

Just wondering what lens size your using for these shots??? must be pretty wide??10mm-17mm..thanks and super shots neil!!!

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Friday, July 12, 2013 - 07:20 pm:

I use an 17-55mm f2.8 Canon lens. I use a 20 year old f2.8 L
70-200mm for closer shots.

As always, very nice photos. As a geologist, I enjoy viewing the earth from different perspectives and seeing the details not always visible from ground level.
Thank you for sharing!

I'm with you on that sentiment, Dr. Nat even though I'm not a
geologist. Thank you Neil.

THanks, Neil. They're all right. I enjoy seeing your photos also, mainly because I really don't enjoy flying. And I especially don't enjoy it in small planes. Came close to crashing twice and I have to desire to ever get on one again. So I'm always happy to see aerial shots from you on pasty :-)
