There was some excitement on the 4th of July in Misery Bay and a newcomer to the Pasty Cam, was there to photograph the event. Kathleen Niemi Vettori said she, along with some family and friends were enjoying a cup of coffee, while sitting at their picnic table, overlooking Lake Superior, when they spotted these three deer, swimming across the Lake. It was a hot and buggy day, so I'm guessing part of the reason they were in the water was to cool off and keep the bugs off themselves for a time. I'm not certain how far across they had to swim, but what a neat show, to be able to watch them swim like that, come ashore and then run off down the beach.

So glad you were there to capture it all, Kathleen and thanks for sharing them with us all.

wow, Kathleen! How lucky was it that you were there to witness this event? Wish it had been me. I'd love to see something like this.

Thanks for sharing with us!!

I really enjoyed today's photos, thanks to you, Kathleen. I remember a few years ago when I was trolling with an elecric motor along the coast on a foggy day (not unlike today) and heard a faint clicking along the shore line. It was a lone doe and I figured it too was escaping the bugs by walking there.

Good stuff! It's like watching synchronized swimming at the Olympics.

Glad there was a witness.

What an awesome experience, Kathleen! Thanks so much for sharing. The instant I saw the first photo, I was reminded of the 13,000 year old Upper Paleolithic carving found in France. Enter "Swimming Reindeer" on the Wikipedia search line to see it.

I bet these deer were not swimming to reach safety from rapid raising flood waters like the deer did several times this year down in our lower field.

Smart deer! Love the 'show' - thank you, Kathleen!

You don't see that very often, nice shots!

We had a young deer swim across our lake (Sandy Lake) last summer. Then a short time later it swam back. And about a week later we saw it swimming again. I don't know if it was looking for mom or if it was lost but I had never seen that before on our lake.

Oh, deer! (LOL)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 - 02:33 pm:

Thomas, I knew that would be your response.LOL ;)

I can't say that I blame them. Due to all of the rain the bugs have been bad. I have seen deer come to our yard for corn and all they do is stamp their feet and shake their tails. It was a rough spring for them, the snow was here too long. Have two doe that are all skin and bones, not for long, been feeding them corn and sunflower seeds.

Getting more rain in Ontonagon, at least the fire danger is low.

Thank you Kathleen Niemi Vettori for the great shots.

Gorgeous photographs. How lucky we are that you took them.
Thank you, Kathleen.
