Happy Father's Day! For today's Shoebox Memory, to honor a father with a role in U.P. history, we have picked a Dad who has appeared on the Pasty Cam before: Ralph Mannisto. Ralph is mentioned on the FinnFestUSA2013 website as a source of musical inspiration in the Copper Country. You may remember seeing him on the Pasty Cam in younger days when he worked as a trammer above ground at the mines (and had a really good tan):

Or you may recall seeing his Mom and older sisters in a previous Shoebox Memory around the time we re-opened The Hut in Kearsarge, where Ralph's sister Nina used to serve lunch and run the Wolverine Store years before The Hut was built.

Ralph Mannisto grew up and served in those mining days, and went on to have a family of his own. We understand he was a legendary accordion player, associated with Suomi college, today's Finlandia University. He passed away in August of 2006 at the age of 87.

Today we honor all the Dads out there who provide for their families, and have given their kids a good start in life. We also welcome to the Copper Country everyone arriving for FinnFest, as another wonderful summer season gets underway in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.

Have a good week :o)

Thanks, Charlie. I'm looking forward to attending parts of Finn Fest
and seeing many of my Copper Country relatives.

Ralph was my uncle. My mother is far left of photo of the women. My Grandmother is in the middle.
All ten were raised on the farm in Phoenix. Ralph attended the one room schoolhouse there. It was moved to Jacobs Falls for a camp. It is now the old part of the Society of St John's complex.
Ralph owned a music store in Northville, Mi. He was an avid music teacher as well.
He was very active in the Finnish Cultural center built there. He traveled to Finland several times with the Finnish choir.
Ralph was a camera man during WW2 in France. I wonder when I see footage of planes returning from missions, if he was the one who shot it.

A wonderful family, Eliisa and Neil!

By Mary L. Wolter (Mwolter) on Monday, June 17, 2013 - 09:02 am:

Thanks for the background info, Neil! Ralph was my uncle also - his wife, Ruth, is my dad's oldest sister. I hope that Eliisa and Ruth saw the write-up. I'll send a message to Eliisa via Facebook just to make sure.

And thanks, Charlie, for choosing Uncle Ralph for your father's day cover story and photo! Your website is a real blessing to me.
