Yes, that's right, freighters load and unload at Marquette's Upper Harbor any time of the day or night. When they arrive with their cargo, they have to unload it to get on their way to another port and another load.

Mike Schneider was out and about after dark, with his trusty camera and captured today's first two shots of the Michipicoten and the Kaye E. Barker, tied up at the Upper Harbor Ore Dock in Marquette. The lights of the docks give the scene a somewhat eerie effect and give off quite a glow around the two freighters. Nice job!

Mike's last photo, was snapped as one of the Canadian Steamship Line freighters was making a return to Marquette. Mike said with the way the sky and water blended that day, it looked like the freighter was floating on air. Sure is a neat effect and I really like the way the sun has lit up the front of the boat, too. Thanks for giving us a "freighter fix" to end the week, Mike!

Anybody hungry for Seafood? The Rotary in Houghton has some for you today.

Nice pics. All 3 ships have the pilothouse at the bow. Is the Michipicoten a Canadian ship? The reason I ask is because there's a small community on Lake Superior called that, located south of Wawa, Ontario.

Always love to see the freighters! Yes, Thomas, the Michipicoten is Canadian. I have a Canadian e-mail friend whose husband worked on it for a short while.

Lower lakes towing, and shipping, have vessels registered in Canada and the United States. The Michipicoten is under Canadian Registry. They name their vessels honoring rivers on or where the vessels trade.
