When Judy Byykkonen and her family wanted to go for a peaceful hike to enjoy nature in the Keweenaw, they headed north to the Eagle Harbor area, to hike in the Holy Transfiguration Monastic Park.

If, like me, you've never been there, then it's high time you make plans to visit soon. Judy's photos give you a good idea of some of the things you'll come upon during your excursion. There are actually several trails, one that is about a half mile long, taking you to the gorge at Jacob's Creek and others that complete a 2.5 mile route, which bring you to the Arnold Mine ruins. Pedestrian traffic - no wheeled vehicles and please take only pictures and leave only footprints.

Directions to the park, courtesy of Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau, are as follows: Drive north on US-41 to the Eagle Harbor Road, turn left. The trail system is accessed from the west side of Eagle Harbor Road, about 300 yards north of Jacob's Creek. There is a small sign, bearing a cross that marks the Trailhead. Limited parking is available, alongside the Monastery Service Drive, up to the gate. Please do not block the drive or access to the gate

The Monk's have done a wonderful service opening this area to the public. I hope that peoples do not tamper with the rocks of the Arnold Mine ruins. One stone pulled can cause the collapse of a whole corner. Enoy this for what it is and treat with respect. Wonderfull nature and histoy all in one. Wonderfull pictures. Thank you for sharing.
P.S. help support them and visit the "Jam Pot" for Thimble Berry jam.

I haven't been there either. I'll try to rectify that this summer.

The skill of the stonemasons of that era never ceases to impress! A century of Keweenaw weather later and their skill and workmanship are still quite evident.

We were there last Fall. Great place to visit and a relatively easy hike.
