Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to take a hike with some friends, along the series of falls that make up the Hungarian Falls. Before I get to the photos, I just want to make you aware that the Keweenaw Land Trust has been leading a fund raising campaign, supported by folks interested in preserving the Uppermost falls area of the Hungarian for the public to be able to continue visiting the area, as it had been put up for sale. The KLT conducted a successful drive to raise the funds needed to purchase the property and is the process of doing so, keeping the area open to the public. You can read more about the effort and find info on how you can donate if you'd like to help out, here: Project Hungarian Falls. You'll also find a map on this page, with dots you can click on for more information about each of the falls in the Hungarian series.

OK, back to the photos. We started our hike on the snowmobile trail, which is at the bottom of the series of falls, so we came upon the primary Hungarian Falls which is the biggest, but without climbing down into the gorge, I was unable to get a decent shot of it, so the top of the waterfall through the trees is what you're seeing in the top photo. The next shot, is the view from the top of the primary falls, looking out at Torch Lake. Quite the scenery there.

The next two photos are the Middle Falls (or as some of the locals refer to it, The Bluffs). First the entire view of the cascade, then the top part of the flowage over the edge. The roar of the water here was music to the ears.

Small middle falls is the next in the series of falls and is just a small drop between the middle falls and the dam falls, which is in the sixth photo. The dam (seen in the seventh photo) was set up for fire protection years ago, but is no longer used for that purpose.

The last picture is of the Uppermost Falls, with my hiking partners checking it out. This upper falls and the dam area are all part of the land that is being purchased to keep it open as a nature area for public use. It's definitely a project that the area public feels strongly about and has banded together with the KLT to make it happen. Yooper power!

Beautiful shots, Mary, thanks for sharing your jaunt! So nice to see green instead of white.:)

coppercountryexplorer.com has a story of this. At the top of their page click archive then under industry bottom left click Hungarian and there will be 7 entries. If you are like me once you go to this site you will get lost exploring the CC.

Oh wow! Love these shots! They're a lot like the ones we took a few years back, only I don't think the water was running so good. They may be in my gallery, I'm not sure.

At any rate, thanks so much for sharing these with us today! Something to brighten up the gloom that's come to be Minnesota this spring!! And today is no exception.

Have a great day!

Today is the traditional Memorial Day. Let's remember those who gave their lives for Liberty today, too, and every day.
