Joe Kirkish had the pleasure of showing a Keweenaw visitor from Finland, around the Freda area recently. The following is what Joe told me about the photos and the young man:

The young fellow in the photos, is Olli Autonen, here from Finland, who spent 3 months at Finlandia - skiing, canoeing, along with giving lectures and will be leaving this coming Tuesday. He’s been doing a lot of sight-seeing, mainly enjoying the comparisons and contrasts between the Keweenaw and Finland. He really soaked up more with me on this day, than I ever did on my own. I took him down the covered road through Stanton Township, to the Freda Road and down to the lake, which was putting on an unusually vigorous show just for him. It was a solid afternoon of a photo shoot, with the foggy weather actually intensifying the pre-summer look of the area, the covered road and the lake. Thought you might like to see the results of my shooting although he shot much more than I did and from his own particular viewpoint. He plans to enter into a career in journalism. I have a hunch, if his writing is as sharp as his camera eye, he’ll do well.

Having never been to either the Keweenaw nor Finland I'm no judge but I'll bet Olli finds both places much alike.

Great pics. I was just along the covered road myself recently!

Traveling through Finland last summer very much reminded us of the UP. Even parts of Sweden reminded me of areas around Bruce Crossing and Trout Creek or northern Minnesota. Of course, Norway looks nothing like the Great Lakes area....

Great pictures! I love the covered road!! We almost always take that way when we go to Freda. But then you miss Redridge and I love Redridge, too. So, you have to take one way up and one way back. Love the pictures of The Lake, too! I'm glad he was able to see all of this before going home!!
