The Sandhill Cranes have been back in the Keweenaw for a few weeks already and their return is another sign that Spring is here. Now we just have to convince mother nature of that fact and perhaps the snow faucet will be turned off.
Barb Bouwkamp captured this Sandhill Crane out near Big Traverse and she either was able to get pretty close to it or she was prepared with a telephoto lens for a good profile of this large bird. It's a welcome sight when they return.

These cranes are so neat! I'm glad these pictures were posted today as Bob & I have been watching two cranes down in our bottom field. I didn't know if they were native to this area or not as we have never seen them here before.

We see these in West Michigan when we camp on a friends property. It sounds like Jurassic Park in the early morning. My wife could not remember what they were called so by word association they are now called "Dirt Birds". Its fun to wake up to them while tenting.

That's close, Allen.;) I love to watch cranes walk....so gracefully and carefully!

We also wanted to add a couple of shots taken by Tom & Elaine Hall, our neighbors here in Eagle River, snapped a couple of weeks ago. It was unusual to see the turkeys and deer mingling as they were. The snow has only been gone little more than a week.
I love the Sandhill cranes. Their call sounds almost prehistoric!Wonderful photos.
