The Keweenaw Island Coalition has 24 registered feeding stations with the Michigan DNR and they are worried that because of the late winter we're having, that the deer herd is running out of feed.

Melanie Hakala Rossi was on hand to help feed the deer herd that visits the Eagle River park on M-26 this weekend. While Melanie was there taking pictures, the deer kept coming out of the woods to feast on the food being dumped there for them. They counted up to 200 and stopped there, but Melanie said there was easily another hundred deer, at least. She said they were everywhere.

Hopefully, winter will realize that it's supposed to be Spring here in the Keweenaw, soon and it will depart and let the snow melt away, like it should be doing. Then the deer herd will be able to get back to taking care of their own again, instead of having to rely on human help to make it through.

The local Sportsman's Clubs are getting low on funds to continue feeding the deer, if you'd like to help out by donating any amount, you can find the local clubs contact information here: The Keweenaw Island Coalition. The Keweenaw deer herds thank you!

Melanie also snapped the last shot while in Eagle River and yes, that's a snowmobile, skimming the water along Lake Superior's shoreline, on the Eagle River beach. Unusual with the amount of snow we've been getting, that there's not an ice build up along that shoreline.

Amazing photos of the deer! The snowmobiler looks like he's having an absolute hilarious riot, but I bet he needed to wash an awful lot of sand out of the drive train at the end of the day.

What a totally awesome job that would be. I would love to be there feeding those deer. It's so much fun just to watch them from my mom's back porch. They are so beautiful :-)
