You either love them, with that masked face or you hate them, because they can be so destructive. But no matter how you feel about these critters, they are a sign that Spring really is just around the corner, since they don't start coming out of hibernation if Spring isn't near. At least that's what I'm hoping this Raccoon is a sign of.

What an outstanding shot from Frederic W. Koski. He sure has a knack for getting these critters to stop and pose just right for him, so he can snap a great picture. I think he actually got this one off without the raccoon even knowing he was under the scrutiny of Fred's eagle eye. Nice work, Frederic and thanks for sharing it with us all.

We had one in our cottage over the winter a few years ago. Came in around the pipes under the sink. When we walked in the door, there wasn't a single spot where you could put your foot down without stepping on some sort of litter. Tore everything up in the kitchen, dining area and living room. I'm glad I always shut all the bedroom and bathroom doors before I leave! Footprints on the mirrors. None of the furniture or draperies were harmed, though. Didn't appear to go to the bathroom inside either! Must've been going in and out and wanted to keep his winter residence the way he wanted it!

Almost hit one on the way to work this morning. 5am, pitch black out with no snow on the ground...very hard to see the bandit.

Great photo! I also hope that means spring is on its way.

Raccoons evidently don't hibernate down my way...have seen them on my backporch in the dead of winter. Of course that was during mild winters.
Neat shot, Frederic!

I just love the raccoon photo! They do get into mischief..and steal from bird feeders...but they sure are cute!My doves are back too,by the way! Spring is really coming...

I like them best in photos! And this is a great photo!

My friend is a successful rehabilitator for these guys. They're like cats with thumbs, in a way - very independent, sort of trainable (but definitely not domesticated), and super smart when figuring out how to get into mischief or food! I always cheer when they 'leave the nest' and return to their own backyard! Truly fun while it lasts, but not a moment too soon for release.

Alex.. too bad you missed it. I'm on the side that definitely do not like them. Too many times do I see the destruction they cause and the filth they leave behind....

Anyone heard from Deb (used to be a yooper) lately? Just wondering.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 - 07:06 pm:

Thanks for asking about me, Ken. I guess it's been a while. I wasn't home this past weekend, and last week my mom fell twice and was brought by ambulance to the hospital. We've pretty much been dealing with stuff about that, even though we're 8 hours away, there are things we can do. And trying to decide if we should go up there. Was gonna go UP there this weekend, but there's a nasty storm moving in. So now we're thinking about next weekend. Would rather not use my vacation if I don't have to because I may need it at a later date.

Anyway, that's why I haven't been on much. Love my pasty family :)

Love the picture of the raccoon.
