I keep talking about Spring, Spring, Spring lately, but the photos we've been viewing still look like winter. That's because it sure does still feel like winter with all the snow that remains on the ground and more predicted to fall.

E. Neil Harri was recently flying over Ontonagon and snapped these "Spring" photos of the town, with the comment that the snow and ice is melting around there. You can see though, that the ground is still covered with white. It's neat that Neil gives us two views of the town, looking in opposite directions. I especially like the way the road seems to go on and on in the first shot.

The third photo is the Fourteen Mile Point Lighthouse, which is located 14 miles east of Ontonagon, on private property. Back in the 80's, there was a fire there and all that remains are the brick walls and tower of the building. This light is remotely located with no access roads, as they have been long ago grown over, so your only chance of viewing it is by boat or here in Neil's photo. It is not open to the public, since it is privately owned, so we ask that you please respect the privacy of the owners and not try to get in closer for a look.
You can find more information on this light by clicking on the following link: Fourteen Mile Point Lighthouse.

Great Shots this morning...this is the coldest spring i can remember.!!!!

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 08:04 am:

Very nice photos!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 08:07 am:

Thanks for the great start to the day with these gorgeous shots. In particular i enjoyed the Fourteen Mile Point Lighthouse picture. As Mary said, this one isn't accessible to the public. What a shame the morons started the fire that gutted it years ago. Too bad they weren't punished for that.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 08:15 am:

Love the lighthouse picture. I never even knew there was a lighthouse there. Interesting!

By dane l. christensen (Danech55) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 08:29 am:

More snow on the way to the U.P. according to the NWS. You had to know that last year's freakishly warm spring would even itself out this year.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 08:32 am:

Aerial shots are some of the best! Joanie is your house in the pictures? :)

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 08:59 am:

I agree with you, jbuck. That lighthouse looks like it was a beauty! I know I would have loved to see it in its glory. What a shame. Great photos from Neil, as always.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 09:39 am:

Great shots, Neil, thank you for braving the cold. Question...isn't there a Fourteen Mile Point Lighthouse on Lake Huron side in the LP?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 10:06 am:

Shirley, that's 40 Mile and its the same floor plan

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 10:13 am:

Thanks, Jbuck, I knew there was a '4' in there somewhere.;)
We visited it one cold, rainy day about 14 years ago.

I really enjoy the photos from the air. They give a clearer picture of the layout down below. very nice!

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 12:22 pm:

I just dropped into Eagle River Wi for lunch. No spring here
either. . We are not the only ones getting an extended season.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 01:18 pm:

Now that's what I call living..."I just dropped into WI for lunch".
Where's dinner, San Diego? :=)

By Jim Noble (Jnoblegas) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 01:23 pm:

Ontonagon doesn't look right without the paper mill at the harbor.

By Waveaction (Lakelover) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 03:33 pm:

Love those aerial pictures!

I also agree, Ontonagon looks naked without the paper mill. :(

As for Fourteen Mile Point; It has been visited, only by ATV or snowmobile. I'm sure that no one means it harm anymore and all they do is take pictures and leave footprints.

Mary says: No matter if folks walk in or not, it is still "Private Property" and as such, folks should not set foot on the property, unless they have permission.
I seriously hesitated using that photo, since I didn't want to encourage people to make the trek in to check it out. That's why I stressed the "Private Property" part of it.
I'm sure none of us would like to have people walking around our property, say your backyard, even if it is just to take pictures, unless they've come and asked permission to be there. It's a matter of respect and there is certainly a lack of that now-a-days. Not everyone has good intentions, even here in the U.P., believe it or not. Thank you.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 04:11 pm:

So much for respecting private property rights. If folks are going in by atv, they are leaving more than just footprints.

By Waveaction (Lakelover) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 04:19 pm:

Should have known, Captain Paul strikes again. :)

First of all, you have to park your ATV/snowmobile about 3 miles outside of the property and walk in.

Second of all, this ain't the 80s.

Mary says: Please read my message on your previous post.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 04:40 pm:

I ride ATV's and snowmobiles without being disrespectful or careless. I stay on marked trails and pay the fees helping to support the areas we are riding. It's just the few % that are destructive or stupid that ruin it for folks as Bob and myself. As I just now finished doing chores shutting the barn door I saw a young gal driving by in her car heave a Hardees sack and other garbage in my ditch. She saw me seeing her do that, she could have careless.....

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 04:44 pm:

Just a note click onto the link Mary provided, scroll down and read the paragraph Find this light.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 05:16 pm:

Wasn't directed at you or Bob, Janie, or any other responsible rider, but for that 1% that don't care and the misinformed who encourage it in the name of tourism.

That's all from me...

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 05:28 pm:

Today registering our ATV license I got a lecture by a total stranger how anyone who rides any type of recreation/off road vehicle are out to destroy our country. I took it to personal I guess....... :(

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 07:40 pm:

In regard to the link, Mary, it just dawned on me that one of the current owners of Fourteen Mile Point Lighthouse, Don Hermanson, of Keweenaw Video Productions, is the fellow we ordered videos from, in years past. Two of them are about the USCGs Mackinaw and Sundew. We also ordered some coffee mugs with those 2 ships painted on the sides. His videos are great!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 07:40 pm:

Everybody needs to lighten up and not take everything so personal. ;O)

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 07:43 pm:

Since the weather does not sound all to great for this weekend, I might wait to take a ride somewhere.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 07:59 pm:

To me, the pictures posted are enough to take a look at it. I love the link, too. 'Thanks'

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 08:09 pm:

Ya' got a shot of the backside of the lighthouse, with many 'Thanks' to Neil, click on the link and have a picture of the frontside and other structures AND a story of the lighthouse. ;O)

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, April 5, 2013 - 09:16 pm:

You're exactly right, Mary!

The morons who built the campfire on the living
room floor gutted a lovely lighthouse years ago.
But there are still things 'worth' taking and you
can't sort out those who mean well and those who
don't. Respect other's property the way you'd want
yours respected. I'd love to see it in person, but
only from the Lake.
