The Portage Lift Bridge is always an interesting subject for photographing, but night time shots are always a bit more intriguing to me. Today's photos come to us from Chris wood Anderson and give us a glimpse of Houghton's night life, starting with the Bridge.

You might think the second photo of the Bridge is a bit off center, but I think Chris moved the shot down and over, so the sliver of the moon could be captured along with the span that joins Houghton and Hancock. Then the third photo, Chris zoomed right in on the moon. Amazing shot, showing that the moon is still entirely there for the viewing, but the sliver of light is what you see from afar. I know there are technical names for the phases of the moon, I remember studying that with my 10 year old grandson, but my non-technical name has always been a "fingernail moon".

Now, for Chris' last photo... let's have a show of hands from all those who knew right away that this was a photo looking in the windows of the Ambassador in Houghton? What a unique shot, indeed, showing the murals on both sides of the ceiling and the beautiful green lantern lights in the middle. Sometimes it pays to be a "peeping tom". ;->

Out of curiousity, did anyone manage to catch the PAN-STARRS comet near the fingernail moon? We saw it down here as it was very close to the moon a couple nights, even managed to get a couple photos of it. The real show is coming this November when ISON is predicted to be one of the brightest comets ever seen, as much as 15 times brighter than the moon and easily visible in broad daylight!

The moon photo immediately reminded me of the comet, too. Capt., I've been trying to see PAN-STARRS and have been going out of my skull as ill-timed clouds have swept across our skies near sunset. I have a 6" reflector, so I haven't given up hope of catching sight of it, but with more snow moving in, it doesn't look like a shot at it until Friday

I did! I did!! Just a few more weeks 'til I can enjoy some potato skins and a Pirate's Cove from Ambassador. Sigh...

I did! I did! Love the Ambassador. As much for it's character and decor as for the food, which is good too.

Yes, i looked for PAN-STARRS too, and had a couple
decent nights to try to find it, but failed on both
attempts. Really looking forward to the next
"show"!
