There's something fascinating about icicles to begin with, but use a beautiful blue sky, with a few wisps of clouds as a background and they become mesmerizing...at least for me.

Thanks to Joe Kirkish, we have a five photo study of Keweenaw icicles in various shapes and forms. Some that are sparkling, others that are dripping and then there are those that have taken on a shape of their own. I think the best part of icicles forming, is that it means the sun is getting warmer and beginning to melt some of our many inches of snow.

Spring weather can't be too far away, then. Right?

Natures beauty at its finest!

Man, and the other animals of earth are "Heliophagus"---sun eating--ingesting daily and burning as fuel the energy that has flashed across the void of space since the beginning of the universe.

Nice...good clarity and detail.

Who else sees the UP in the third photo? Great shots, Joe, thank you.

Another sure sign of Spring- I see the ice breaker Mackinaw is busy off the west side of the Keeweenaw this morning.

Beautiful photos, Joe. I especially like the fourth one. The silver/blue colors of the icicles are amazing against that sky. I know people tend to complain about winter snow and ice, but there's a lot of beauty in it if you just look for it. Thanks!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, March 15, 2013 - 08:45 am:

Good eye, Dunerat. I like how the blue color seeps through the icicles in the forth shot...mesmerizing image.

The photos today are absolutely lovely. I ,too ,am fascinated by icicles and photograph them but i have not come close to bringing out the beauty as Mr. Kirkish has!

Melting icicles means spring is on it's way!

The first photo looks like a cluster of diamonds! Back years ago, when the air was cleaner, my sisters and I used to eat icicles.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, March 15, 2013 - 10:01 am:

When the roof starts melting off our horse barn, some of the icicles can almost be 4 ft. in length. Looks like a set of nasty teeth.

Icy beauty!

Oh my, Janie! Don't walk under them today...remember ~ "Beware the Ides of March"!;>

Phenomenal photos, Joe! I envy your ability and scenery. I agree, Alex - good eye, Dunerat! When I first saw it, I thought it looked like something, but then I read Dunerat's entry and said, "Of course!" We're supposed to get 1-2 of the wet stuff tonight, but this is Michigan: If you don't like the weather, wait a couple minutes - it'll change.

Stunning!
