When it was originally constructed in 1913 it was known as the Calumet Colosseum, a popular early hockey venue. Later when the local National Guard Armory burned, its use and name was changed to "The Armory". Most recently when a new Armory came to Calumet, the building re-assumed the name of Calumet Colosseum.

On thing hasn't changed over the past century: continual hockey games in-season. In fact, the Colosseum holds the distinction of being the oldest continuous hockey rink in the world, having never missed a season. This month's USA Hockey Magazine has an excellent article on the Colosseum/Armory's history, and the upcoming celebration next January, which officially marks 100 years of hockey matches.

As always, our thanks to MTU Archives for the top photo of "C & H Semi-Centennial Celebration" in 1916. And for the second photo, thanks to the outstanding "Copper Country Hockey History" website, which gives a lot more of the history of arenas, teams and stars from the birthplace of professional hockey.

Have a good week :o)

Good morning, Mickill. Maybe some folks overslept this morning.:) I, for one, don't like 'daylight saving time'!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, March 10, 2013 - 11:03 am:

Good Morning. I like Daylight Savings Time, but I prefer it to go back to starting the first Sunday in April and ending in October, I think.

I drank a lot of hot chocolate as a kid at those
hockey games!

Thank you, Charlie, for another 'blast from the past'. Interesting pix and article. Hope you have a good week too.

Lots of fun dances at the Armory back in the 70s!

I see Calumet has another snowstorm. Now the lens for the 5th Street pastycam in Calumet is covered in snow again. Hope someone or the sun will clean off the lens so I can see Calumet again. Thanks!

Me too, Evelyn. Kinda smothery!:>

Back in the 60's, when it was "The Armory", they had roller skating in the fall before the weather turned cold enough to "make ice" (which was done with a long fire hose back then).

People could rent skates which clamped to the sides of your shoes near the front, and a strap to hold the heel in place. Worked poorly when people were wearing soft tennis shoes. There was a hardwood floor that was in big sections that was laid down over the entire section inside the sideboards, and taken up again and stored under the bleachers when not in use the rest of the year. Must have been over a hundred pairs of those old rental skates, wonder what became of them.

By the way, the dance floor was on the second level.

By Diana P. (Diana) on Monday, March 11, 2013 - 03:58 pm:

Roger, I had a pair of roller skates like that in the 50's. The front clamps tightened with a "skate" key, I think. And you're right, they didn't work too well with tennis shoes.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, March 11, 2013 - 04:17 pm:

Roger and Diana, you both brought back fond memories. I didn't own tennis shoes so I didn't have a problem there. I wore 'saddle oxfords', remember those? My boyfriend (later my husband), my sister and I skated at a place called the Hippodrome in Nashville which rented bootskates. My 'center of gravity' prevented me from being a skater of any kind.:>

By Diana P. (Diana) on Monday, March 11, 2013 - 05:12 pm:

Shirley, I've been trying to remember what kind of shoes I wore with those key skates, since tennis shoes did not work so well, and you jogged my memory. We called them "saddle shoes". They were white and dark blue/black, mainly for school wear.
