Charlie started us out yesterday, with a look at the A&W in Baraga, back in 1963, so I thought I'd toss in some photos taken around the Baraga area, too. Susan Uren sent these in from a recent trip to Marquette and back.

Her first shot is just rounding the curve on the return trip to Baraga, with the State Park coming up on the left. The road doesn’t look too bad on this stretch, but her next photo shows a different road surface...ice-packed and slippery looking. I'm not certain where along the way, this was taken, but it sure looks a bit whiter than the first shot.

Sue's last two photos were snapped when they neared Nestoria on the way to Marquette. She said it was 20° below zero as the sun was coming up and they saw the "rainbow" off to the left of the sun. Sue said she did not think it could be classified as a Sundog, so I thought I'd open it up to the rest of you to determine whether it is or not, since I have no clue. ;->

I believe I would call that "half" a sundog since we don't see the other side.

The 2nd photo is what it was like on the way to work this morning in SE-MI. Mid-50s expected tomorrow.

Nice pictures! The roads around here were awful for a while, due to freezing rain. They were just getting to be okay to drive on, and we got freezing rain again yesterday, right before it started to snow. I can't wait to see what the roads will be like today!

Oops....after closer inspection, I see that's a truck, not a bus. Whatever...I wouldn't want to be in it, or anything else on that road!

The third picture is a sundog, and a very nice one, too. If they are on both sides of the sun they are sundogS. They occur when sun is refracted through hexagonal snowflakes that are mostly lined up in the same direction. We've gotten them occasionally here in Copper Harbor, but lately we haven't had the right conditions. I keep looking...

Oboy, that view of the Baraga State Park brings me back to 1958 or 1959!

I was returning to da Tech from my first or second Christmas break, and sharing a ride and a bit of the driving in a friends 1955(?) Chevvy Bel Air station wagon.

I was driving as we came around that curve from the south, with about 4" of snow on the road, when all of a sudden after a skid and spin, we were coming out of the park, with the rear tires having just tapped the curb ever so gently.

No damage, no harm, just one heck of an adrenalin rush! Whee! We proceeded on our way after just a few minutes catching our breath and asking "What just happened there?"
