We visited the shores of Great Sand Bay on Friday, but we were mostly looking at the ice and freighters beyond. Today we get a view that includes the sandy shoreline. Joe Kirkish told me that this is his favorite place to stop on the way to Copper Harbor, because he said it seems to change by the hour. These shots were taken a couple of days ago in the late afternoon, as the sun was beginning to go down. It doesn't reflect our most recent snowfall over the weekend, but it does give you a good idea of how much ice there is piled into the bay, yet shows the shoreline still sporting plenty of sand. Some of that sand had blown around and made beautiful designs in the snow that was there at the time, too. Looking at Joe's photos, I can certainly understand why it's his favorite stop.

Oh wow! What a treat to wake up to these pictures. I especially love the 3rd and 5th ones. (Sorry, Janie, lol.)

That is too funny, Alex. NOT, is right!!

Beautiful photos this morning; thanks Joe! Of course, as a dunerat, I'm a complete sucker for photos of dunes and sand. I love the light and the dimension of the ice mounds in the third photo.

Oh come now Alex, where's your sense of adventure?? ;-)
Great pics. Less than a month now......

Okay Capt...I want to see a pic about a month from now, of you wading in wearing your best Bermuda’s. Definitely one for the “Real Men of Pasty” calendar :-)

Had a hard time choosing a favorite because they're all beautiful, but if pinned down I'd have to say the last one. Thanks, Joe!

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Monday, January 14, 2013 - 10:32 am:

I remember it was Easter Sunday on April 19, 1987, it was 80+ degrees in the Keweenaw, and a bunch of us MTU students went out to McClains for a picnic. The beer got put in a duffel bag and thrown in the lake to keep cold. But the knot in the rope used to retrieve it came undone, and I got elected to wade out in waist-deep water to get the beer. That was the coldest water I've ever been in, so I can't imagine what it would be like to go in when the air temps are low and there is actually an ice cover! Too darn cold for me, I know that much.

Great pics!

By Jerome F. Paskvan (Paskvanj) on Monday, January 14, 2013 - 05:17 pm:

My dad and his friends went fishing early on Sunday mornings. When they got home, the families, Paskvans, Stimac, Johnsons, Rosts from Copper City and the Perreaults from Lake Linden, hopped in their cars and headed for Great Sand Bay. The guys cooked burgers and the kids swam in the lake until their lips turned blue.
