Good morning to all. Some scheduling
complications this morning will delay our
regular update. Hopefully we'll have today's
pictures in about an hour.

Happy 12-12-12!

(the above may be on the wrong page...posting complications this morning)

We don't have to worry about whether we'll have a white Christmas this year or not, in the Keweenaw, that's for sure. The white fluffy stuff has arrived again and is covering everything, looking like frosting. My hubby, Jim Drew was out snapping some pictures of all the beauty the snow creates, when it covers the landscape. His first shot is looking down the Rice Lake Road, on his way out to our farm. Then he snapped some photos along the way of the trees, heavy laden with snow and looking quite pretty.

That last photo Jim took is of our pond, frozen over and beginning to get covered by the snow, too. When our boys were young, we used to clear a portion of that pond, cut a hole in the ice and use a 5 gallon pail to flood the surface to make it smoother for skating. It was a ton of work, but so nice to have an ice rink right there on the farm for them to enjoy with their buddies. Fun memories of their younger days. :->

Enjoyed this winter wonderland tour! How I wish here in Linn Co. Iowa we were in for a white Christmas!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 11:20 am:

Winter Wonderland! Nothing major in the forcast for SE-MI.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 11:25 am:

And I sit here thinking "Oh, to see scenes like these in SE Texas just once"!! That would be a day to break out the lounge chair, an adult beverage, and sit on an overpass along the freeway and watch the fun begin......

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 12:10 pm:

Mary, thanks to your husband for the beautiful scenes. Hope he has snowtires, studs, or chains!
But then again when we lived in N.D. we drove in those conditions all winter with none of the above.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 12:17 pm:

I can't wait to see the scenes in person. Less than two weeks to go!

By George L. (Yooperinct) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 12:40 pm:

Capt Paul, I love your sense of humor! I agree, that would be great entertainment!
Here in CT all we need to get is 4 or 5 inches of snow for the media to go into a frenzy and schools to close. Only then do the highway commuters drive at 50mph rather than 80......scary indeed, they will not slow down and learn how to drive in it. All we seasoned New England folk can do is try to avoid them!

By Just me (Jaby) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 12:54 pm:

The photos certainly are beautiful today. I have to admit-winter brings some great photo ops!

By Eugene Zuverink (Zube) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 01:20 pm:

What beautiful pictures. It's the proper thing for this time of the year. The first picture looks like you had enough for the plows to work.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 02:33 pm:

Beautiful Winter scenes.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 02:47 pm:

Just beautiful pictures! Makes you want to break out the snowshoes ~ ok, maybe not yet.

The first shot looks like what we always say: "scraped it right down to the ice".

By Gary Pieknik (Rice_lake_gary) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 03:16 pm:

Ahhh....... just a few miles down and around the corner to my piece of heaven.... well maybe in the summer ;-)

By Karen Benton (Nerakthenice178) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 05:00 pm:

Beautiful pictures! Capt Paul, I about died from laughter! And George L, when I was stationed in Philadelphia, they closed the schools with a dusting!! For real, it was less than 1" and there were so many accidents, it was pathetic. I can't wait for the white stuff to get to the SE MI LP!!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 05:31 pm:

Karen, are you sure that wasn't Cincinnati instead of Philly? Drivers from either one of those 2 cities would never survive snows of the 'far north', be it the UP or ND!

By dane l. christensen (Danech55) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 07:26 pm:

It's not like the people in SE michigan know how to drive in the winter. Believe me I know better!

By Mike Schneider (Upmike) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 08:33 pm:

Great photos! Love it when the snow holds on!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 08:39 pm:

Thank you for the wintry pictures, Mary & Jim!

I don't know, Capt Paul, I think they did a great job of demolition derby games in Minneapolis a few days ago, from the pictures I saw of that. They had well over 600 vehicle crashes and/or landing in the ditches, etc. The photos really were evidence of a great demo derby, and those guys should be used to snow, unlike Houston! I guess since Minneapolis didn't get very much snow last year, and they got 16 inches in a day or two, they just couldn't handle it?

At least here in mid-Michigan, there was a little bit of an excuse, since we had a Freezing Rain Advisory on top of our snow overnight Saturday night, perhaps, LOL?

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 11:27 pm:

Great pictures Mary & Jim, wish I was up there blasting around in it! Liked the ice rink story as well Mary, I remember those days and shoveling the rink and playing hockey long after daylight was gone, and my hands & feet were frozen too. Good stuff!
