A fresh blanket of snow fell on the Keweenaw Peninsula last night. This is the view out the window on winter mornings at our home in Eagle River (and it's not even winter yet!) With sudden Lake Effect snow we get a little nervous this close to Christmas, because of the volume of pasty orders we've committed to ship out of Calumet. Hopefully the FedEx trucks will get through OK.

I looked back in the Archives and found this shot of the old outhouse, which appeared on December 19, 1998. Look at the difference in the height of the trees.

1998
Your regular weekday moderator, Mary Drew, lives over in Lake Linden, and she usually prepares the pictures the day before. I happened to see her Google chat light on this morning when my day started about 4am (as her day was just ending). We chatted about sudden changing conditions here in the U.P., and the continual need for more pictures. Here's an idea we came up with: Between now and the end of the year, if you see a CURRENT scene you'd like to share on the Pasty Cam - whether in the U.P. or elsewhere - email it to mdrew@pasty.com. We will post as many of the pictures as we can, then select one of the photographers to receive a special prize: a bag of Trenary Toast. We will call it our "Toast to 2012" and announce the winner at the end of the month (end of the year). By the way, you don't have to send in a picture to be in the running for a bag of this crunchy treat... you could just enter our December Contest, which features it as one of the prizes :o)
Just a small clarification on the "elsewhere" shots:
As an example, the shot in the review last week from DC Yooper with their snowstorm - DC Yooper's photo from 2002. People formerly from the U.P., with scenes that remind them of the U.P. would be relevant. Thank you! :-)

Great idea Charlie!!
Just one question; is there a limit to how many photos we can send Mary?

By Paul Roberts (Grizzlyadams) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 06:59 am:

Ahhhh it's good to see home again. The snow brings it that much closer. Thanks Charlie! An early Christmas present! And all you had to do was snap (and post) a picture! :-) An amazing vista I have always enjoyed and miss especially this time of year. LOVE the snow!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 07:57 am:

Nice photos...no snow in SE-MI and none expected in the near future. Looks like it could be another mild winter for us. (famous last words?)

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 08:35 am:

Looks like the tree trunk that is hanging over the outhouse in the 1998 photo is now missing! If it fell, it must have missed the outhouse!! That's a good thing!

The wider shot with the lake is gorgeous!

Great idea! But if they're not in the UP, I hope that they will
at least be either Michigan or the Lake Superior region. I
mean, this is Pasty after all. :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 09:13 am:

Great idea, Charlie. We got BLASTED the past couple of days! After getting NONE last year, this was quite the change!!!

Love the panoramic view!!

I made it through yesterday. It was a tough day as it was the 4 year anniversary of my dad's death. I was down, not very talkative, had a hard time getting motivated, but I made it. Love you dad!!

By Eugene Zuverink (Zube) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 09:48 am:

What nice pictures today. Hard to believe it is four years ago Deb your Dad went to his new home.
Many memories you must have.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 09:54 am:

Deb, I understand....

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 10:00 am:

So do I, Deb. And then of course Christmas is coming and that gets
the memories going too. A bittersweet proposition, but we are
thankful for the memories, aren't we?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 10:54 am:

As Bob Hope once sang: Thanks for the Memory!!

As hard as it is Deb, you will always have the fond memories of your Dad that no one can take away.......

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 01:45 pm:

In agreement with all the others, Deb. Thank God, He gave us the ability to remember our loves ones and forever hold them near.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 02:28 pm:

Beautiful. Thanks 4 sharing.

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 05:25 pm:

Love todays photos. A question about submitting photos - Do they have to be winter photos or can they be from the summer?

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 - 07:50 am:

i wish i knew that you can mention lost loved ones on certain days. i would have mentioned a few loved, and missed, loved ones on certain days.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 - 08:23 pm:

sometimesyooper (Nancyd) - We're looking for winter photos that we can use right now, so they should be current to the conditions in the U.P. right now.

Thanks for asking and feel free to send photos from the other seasons during those seasons, too. We're ALWAYS looking for current photos to share!

Thanks again!
