A little different Shoebox Memory today... We often receive notes about Reunions which are somehow connected to pasties. For example, we get lots of feedback from the Michigan Tech Alumni reunions in Denver and Anchorage and elsewhere, which serve up Pasty Central pasties (and keep our kitchen busy :o) But this week I received these photos from the Sullivan Family (which makes their own pasties, thank you very much) from their most recent annual Bake-off. Rita Jensen first told us us about it a year ago, and gives us this update:
So it's been a year since I last sent an email to ya. 2012 was a crazy year. We had our 23rd pasty cookoff/ family reunion last month. Had 92 folks in attendance. Unfortunately, my parents were unable to make it last minute. Perhaps next year. They are 84 & 85. We had 40 tents on our camping lots....our pasty contest was held on Saturday. I am sending some pics, hope you enjoy them. We had 15 entries, and 3 winners. A Grand chef, and 2 super chefs. We give hand painted rolling pins out to the winners.... some have an amazing collection. My husband and I plan to go to a local new pasty restaurant in the area soon. According to him, I never make them often enough. We serve creamed corn and salad with the meal.... some use catsup, others not. All pasties are warmed a bit before serving.
The Top photo above: my brother Pat, the permanent judge, sister Linda, and niece Erin.... this years judges. We rotate.
Left: the ten Sullivan 'children'.... at our Chincoteague camp site: Michael, Rita, Linda, (twins). Patrick, Kathleen, Debora, Robert, Roberta (twins), Eileen, and Gregory. All born within 8 years.
This is our family prayer, which we say before we start the festivities:
Be well, and Merry Christmas,
Rita Sullivan Jensen
Our thanks to Rita for sharing. We would invite any family or group that serves up pasties for a reunion to send it visitors@pasty.net for a possible future Shoebox Memory. Side note: Edie and I plan to attend one such shindig in February, as we plan to personally deliver several hundred pasties to a Yooper group at The Villages in Florida (Feb 13). We'll be sure to grab a few pictures.
Oh my, Charlie, you just flung a cravin' on me!:9 May have to make a call this week!

What a great story. I remember as a kid my mom making pasties and before she would fold it over she always said, 'do not forget that pat of butter.' I can almost hear her saying it now. ;O)

Great family tradition! Everyone looks happy to be there and enjoying the reunion. Thanks for sharing your story & the pictures.
p.s. the Lions seem to have kept their 'tradition' alive today as well!

Yep, they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory yet again. It's ridiculous!
Very cool tradition. The only Sullivan's I knew lived on the Traprock River. My dad used to fish out there all the time and I went to school with their son, Paul.

Just a note .. there is more about this on the Facebook page for the Sullivan Family Group - lots of pics. Also, this is the 3rd year that we went "green" and we all bring our own plate, cup, utensils etc and wash them and hang to dry on a line in white mesh bags.. EnJOY
