Over the weekend there was a 6-team scrimmage event at Michigan Tech's SDC, for High School Hockey. The teams were from the central Upper Peninsula and included Escanaba, Negaunee, Kingsford, L'Anse, Jeffers and Hancock. Each team played 5 - 14 minute periods, so they played each of the other teams one time during the scrimmaging.
We were there to cheer on my nephew, Derek (that's him moving the puck in the second photo), who plays for the Escanaba Eskymos. It was different watching the teams play this way, versus a regular hockey game of 3 periods and just two teams. The action didn't seem to be as intense, but it was still fun watching them skate and maneuver the puck around the ice. Winter sports are underway here UP North

When I was a kid I always dreamed of being an ice skater. In our games of 'pretend' with 2 of my sisters, I was always Sonja Henie.;) I never even mastered roller skating.:(

I played hockey as a youth and even played one year at Northland College in Ashland. When my youngest daughter was in elem school they had roller skating parties down in Monroe,Mi and I was their driver on occasions.
One night as things were slow Lynn talked me into "hey dad come skate with us". How could I refuse that angelic face as she taunted me..I donned the "roller skates" and proceeded onto the floor. Not being very proficient at this i hugged the side boards as I first started. I was not good at all and after a few rounds of this I ventured onto the "open skating" portion of the rink, started to skate fast, then faster after all I was the dad and could do nothing wrong..But wait the Dam...little girl got in front of me and I did not know how to stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Needless to say after they picked her up and transported her to the hospital we headed for home where my sprained knee prevented me from walking up the stairs to bed and I had to miss 3 days of work. The young lady was not seriously hurt and made it to school the next day probably talking about my exploits...........

LOL! Eddyfitz. Now I'm glad I never learned to roller skate.;) Our daughter tried it on their sidewalk a few years ago and wound up breaking her wrist. ouch!

Wow hockey!!! It is my favorite sport to watch and play. Many years ago I was on a womens team and we had to play the Canadian women quite often. OUCH....they were tough. Anyway my story goes that the first day in practice we were doing drills. I skated fast and proudly to the end of the rink tripped and fell but did not let my stick go and my face hit the ice. I never ever did that manuever again.
Mary what a great shot of your nephew in that second photo. One could almost feel his effort and determination looking at that shot. Photo shot that is.
I really enjoyed your story Eddyfitz.
