Steve Brimm captured something we don't see very often here in the Keweenaw and he spotted it just outside his cabin door. Yes, that Cardinal photo was taken way UP North here in Copper Harbor. The talk around the area is that there have been several of these beautiful red birds of late. Such striking color, when you do see one, it stops you in your tracks to either gaze at it in disbelief of such beauty or sends you dashing for your camera, like Steve did here. My guess is that this beautiful visitor will be heading south soon, if he hasn't already done so since the photo was snapped.
The second photo was taken by Mike Schneider and is a critter more often seen here in the Upper Peninsula, just not right outside the back door, as this one was recently. Mike said he was eating lunch when he spotted this coyote and quickly grabbed his camera to get the photo. Taking a closer look at the animal, you can see he's a bit rough and looks to have lost hair on his hind quarter and tail, so he's probably got what's called mange. It will most likely be a rough winter for this fellow.

The cardinal is so beautiful. One of the treats that God allows us in the 'colorless' months! And aww, how pitiful is the coyote....breaks one's heart.

The Northern Cardinal is another one of our feathered friends advancing its range North! Quite common, year round now in Menominee county in southern U.P., but not always the case, relatively new resident. Perhaps Mr. Cardinal will grace your area all Winter?

TAPS;
Day is done, gone the sun, from the lakes, all is well. Safely rest. GOD is high.
I love the cardinal. I do hope they make a permanent home in the Keweenaw. They were not around when I was growing up there in the 60's but then neither were eagles or mergansers we have those now. I feel sorry for the coyote. Pitiful creature indeed.

Beautiful bird. That fox got Yooper SISU tho.
I was watching a pair of little foxes last night. I threw out some cat treats Ms. Spoiled didn't like, looked out back later, and there was a little fox eating them up! I threw out a couple of dog biscuits and it ran off, and came back with another fox! They were so cute to watch! But I didn't get a good pic. sniff.

Good Morning. That is a gorgeous photo of a gorgeous male cardinal! We have them winter here in mid-Michigan, some years.

Mr. Cardinal is beautiful, but Mr. Bluejay takes my heart!! Love their "call'! This morning out with Brimley & Brody, about 50 yards from me a nice size buck caught my attention snorting and walking a steady pace towards me! Made me a bit nervous, I know this is their season to feel studly, perhaps he found me doe-like?? Pretty cool!!

I love Cardinals. They are just so beautiful to watch and listen to. I, too, love bluejays. They are gorgeous! But then, I love most birds.
That poor coyote. I try to protect my cats from them because they WILL kill our pets, but when I see one who is in that kind of shape, my heart breaks for it. That's just too sad for me :-(

The only good coyote is a dead coyote! They come around our neighborhood as well. They mess with my dog, and they'll meet with a jacketed hollow point, which will ruin their day forsure.
A big bluejay was on my backporch yesterday, Janie, eating dry catfood I had put out for a neighborhood cat. "Tippy" sitting on his window perch at dusk Tues. evening spotted 'our' buck standing too near the road, so I opened the backdoor and 'told' him to go back to the woods!! For his safety and the passing cars. Saw 2 dead ones on two other roads Tuesday. So sad.

We're lucky to have these beautiful cardinals all winter here. I know that sighting one in Texas used to be a treat when we went down there for the winter. Neighbors were talking about the noisy coyotes the last few nights.I kinda like that sound, rather chilling but remincent of wilderness.

When I saw the first photo-I thought for sure it was from Jacky Monette because she has had Cardinals at her bird feeder recently. I have not seen them at mine but then again-i am not real consistent about keeping it filled either. Great pics.

I love the song of the cardinal-- when I hear it I look for the red fellow. Great picture!

Usually the cardinals around our house here in the thumb are in pairs, and the female is quite a bit lighter than the bright male. We have bluejays that like to eat the peanuts I leave on the deck for our chippy. I think our chippy is in his burrow now, so no peanuts out, but the bluejays still fly over to check. Have been noticing lots of chickadees at our bird feeder lately, too. I love to hear their quiet call. All the birds seem to like the black-oiled sunflower seeds that my husband puts in the feeders.

The cardinal picture is especially good.

Agree about the coyotes ~ they prey on the pets in the cities and surrounding areas and will take a deer whenever they can. They do help keep the rodent population down but i'd rather have other critters do that instead.
