Henry Sakari recently sent these shots of a couple of robins he spotted still hanging around here in the Keweenaw. Looks like they're in a crabapple tree, so that might be what's keeping them around even with the colder temps, since they have a good food supply going there. Henry thought the robin in the second photo looked a bit crabby and he attributed that mood to either having missed his flight south or perhaps eating too many "crab"apples. ;->

Henry also spotted the bird in the bottom two photos, in the same tree and was wondering if anyone could tell him what kind of bird it is. My guess would be some type of a small hawk, but I can't put a name to it. Anyone out there in Pasty Land that can help ID this feathered friend? Thanks in advance.

Now those are some nice pictures. Ron knows birds pretty well, but even he's not sure what kind they are, though he says they could be hawks because of the forward facing eyes. I bet Russ will know.

Love the crab apples in the pictures. Gives off a neat effect! Our Robins have flown off for the year. Not sure what the other bird is. Love it's speckles!

Haven't seen robins around here for several days...but did see a red-bellied woodpecker yesterday.

Nice pictures. Notice there are no mountain ash berries this year, least not in the woods behind our home. Enjoy the weekend.

Forgot to add my guess on the other bird...a 'chicken hawk'?

European Starling..our common starling...this is their fall plumage, quite different from breeding garb. Quite common in crab apple trees, usually flocks will take turns with the robins, but some times together.

Ohhhhhh-the photos today are beyond beautiful!!!!!

I thought Starling too, but I've never seen one with a white head....

Donna, the young juveniles of the year, when they are molting into their first 'adult' winter (nonbreeding) plumage often have this light pale gray head for a spell...looks very 'whiteish' in contrast....what we are seeing in these shots. Doesn't help identification when just one individual of a gregarious species is seen.
