First Post

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, October 27, 2012 - 07:48 am:

Congrats, Shirley, on your early bird award. What gets me about this Pasty site is that I checked 4 today's post about 7:30 or so, and it wasn't on here, but when I checked again about now, it was here and showing that it was posted before 6 o'clock. I don't understand why it wasn't on my computer when I checked the 1st time.

Thank you, Thomas, this sudden cold weather and an aching hip gave me my chance for the 'early bird' this morning.
Thank you, Charlie, now I'll have something to cook for Thanksgiving dinner and won't have to travel to Deb's house. ;>
Thomas, computers/internet are still a mystery to me, too. :(

Good morning all! It's a calm morning here in West Michigan with sunshine in the forecast. Have a great day, everyone.

Good morning and congrats to Shirley on her Early Bird!!

Love the 1999 and 2000 photos! They both bring back amazing memories!

I especially appreciate the 2005 photo of the crane. We had several photos and paintings that won ribbons last weekend at our annual art show, of different cranes. Interesting and lovely birds.

Hi. Great pictures today, especially the brilliant fall color ones, like John Dee's rail path, and the Marquette Lighthouse. I also especially likes Sharon Smith's bright rainbow over Copper Harbor! Congratulations, Shirley on your full Early Bird!

My youngest son, a student at Michigan Tech just pointed me to Tech's webcams, showing it snowing and accumulating, at least in the grass, on the Tech campus! It's cold here, today, with our overnight low in the mid-20's. We have snow predicted here on Monday night, too. Have a great weekend, you all! :-)

Congratulations, Northern Michigan on win over Northwood this afternoon. And, congratulations on Midland High on its win over Marquette High School in Midland. :-)

Had a touch of snow on the ground today. Really don't think it will be a cold winter UP here. When I worked at a tree nursery, I was told that the more fir/pine/balsam/spruce needles that dropped on the ground, the colder it would be. The needles protect the roots from the cold. Not too many have dropped this fall.
Also talked to a lot of Yooper friends that said the winters have been getting milder. I will say one thing; These Yoopers are tough, mild might mean only 300" of snow instead of 200". :)

Another great slideshow of scenic beauty + history. Speaking of history, I couldn't resist sharing this list (albeit brief) of newspapers that were published in Keweenaw County. http://michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,2351,7-160-50206_18643-87665--,00.html

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, October 28, 2012 - 12:31 pm:

Couple of short-lived papers there, huh, Thomas?

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, October 28, 2012 - 03:09 pm:

Maybe, Shirley, unless there are other editions, or even editions from other newspapers that haven't been archived.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, October 28, 2012 - 07:56 pm:

Since Houghton County is part of the Keweenaw Peninsula, here's a list of past and present newspapers from there: http://michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,2351,7-160-50206_18643-87646--,00.html

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 - 04:28 pm:

I don't know if anyone will read this at this point, but I found that there was a 3rd newspaper (Copper Miners Journal) in Keweenaw County as recently as the early 1980's.
