Steve Haagen and family were here in the Keweenaw a week or so ago and decided to hit the beach. Of course this time of year when you head to Lake Superior's shore, you have to dress a little differently. But even with mittens, scarf and chook ('tuque' in French), the beauty of the Big Lake is still something to behold.

After the stint at the beach, Steve and crew headed over to the Evergreen Cemetery, just outside of Eagle River, to do some exploring and pay their respects. Quite a few of the headstones there, date back to the mining days and even mention Cliff Mine on the stones, so there aren't many survivors left to care for those older graves. I think it's nice that they then get decorated come Autumn, with the colorful leaves that fall and brighten the grounds for a short period of time.

It's so nice to see that folks like Steve are instilling a sense of respect in their children, for those that have passed this way before us UP North. Even when we don't know who they are, we can stop for a visit, read their headstones and remember them in that brief moment in time. For more on Evergreen, see this Pasty Cameo

Beautiful pictures for sure. And there's nothing like visiting old cemeteries. It's a nice way to spend some time. I now like to go there just to pay my respects to Kosk's son, a wonderful young man who gave his life to protect others. He's got a beautiful spot atop the hill. That young man was taken from his family far too soon :-(

From the cemetery here in Eagle River this morning you can see a multitude of ships passing. Looks like a traffic jam out on the Lake:

Thanks for the map of the passing ships Chopper. Makes one think of people scurring along on a cold autum day. Rushing from one point to their destination thru chilling weather.I can just picture them, heads down, in the biting wind. Thank you.

At this rate they're going to need floating traffic signals out there. Just don't depend on their brakes to work too well during those "panic stops"......

It's interesting to see the last picture--that's my family's plot at
Evergreen, complete with disintegrating wrought-iron fence and
sinking headstones. It contains markers for my great-great-great-
grandmother and her husband's first wife, and we believe that it
also is the final resting place for the family patriarch and two
children, who died young. All were residents of Central from the
1870s to the early 1900s. I'm quite honored to have our family
featured, as it were, on the Pasty Cam!

On my trips to Matt's grave, I often check in on his neighbors.

Emily if you look close the last two pictures are of your family plot. If you look in my gallery there are lots of other pictures from that day and you might find more. We love to look in old cemeteries and read the markers and think what it would have been like to live up there back in those times.
